We stayed at Port Crescent Memorial Day weekend, have spend other holidays there and it's always full to capacity. This year there were ten vacant sites on Sunday...doesn't sound like a lot, but I've never seen vacant sites at Port Crescent on a holiday weekend before. The campground is just 2 to 3 hours north of Detroit, usually making it a really popular place to stay...

I'm sick of following my dreams - I'm just going to ask them where they're going and hook up with them later.

We haven't used a MI SP in the last 8 years. With there last rate increase, we can find private camp grounds with just as nice or nicer sites for about the same cost and don't have to put up with the smoke, drunks, narrow driveways with tree branches, and dirty facilities. When they find someone who knows how to run the SP system right we'll give them a try again but until then we'll camp elsewhere.

MI Director, I think we know your standard response to MI State Parks by now.

I honestly have no idea what state parks you are referring to with the smoke, drunks, etc...but definitely I'd recommend you stick with your private facilities.

No, no, no -- let him bash them all day everyday -- I'd much rather not have to be up at the butt crack of dawn 6 months in advance to try and snag a site! The state parks here in Michigan are terrible folks - stay away! Don't camp at the same place as me because I'm going to be cracking open beers, peeing on the toilet seats, and throwing green leaves on my fire all nite long

We only stay at state parks. I have only found one private park that was $20 a night with water/sewer/electric and was really a nice park. Dirt roads but I can live with that, no dust problem.

We just got back from Otsego Lake State Park. Camped from May 30 to June 2. Really nice park, large sites clean bathhouses, very large nice beach and a huge lake with great walleye fishing. The park has 155 campsites and maybe eight were being used. I went and checked the website a couple days before leaving and a large amout of sites that were reserved had all been cancelled. I think gas prices will have an effect this year. More people camping closer to home.

This is why we go to state parks.

Site in the woods

Fort Custer Rec Area

Interlochen State Park

Not to say we don't stay at private parks. But only in the "off season" since they are so expensive.

Here is one that is very state park like: Timber Ridge, Traverse City

However this park gets some bad reviews by the big rig crowd because the roads are dirt and there are so many trees. Go figure.
