Actually, this is why everything costs more. A giant Enron, approved by Congress in 2000.

Senate Bill 3283, also named the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000. This bill was destined to go nowhere until, late one night, it was attached as a rider to an 11,000-page appropriations bill – which was signed into law by President Clinton.

Now traders have an officially deregulated market for energy futures. Worse, that bill also deregulated many financial instruments – including the collateralized debt obligations that are at the center of today’s mortgage crisis, which may well cost us more than $1 trillion before it’s over.

Ken Lay, late of Enron fame, had been trying to get this passed since the early 1990's. Now it is law, and we get stuck.

It is not supply and demand. Just greed.

When I was a kid gas cost about 38 cents a gallon and a new 2500 square foot home was about $30,000. So now, gas is about $3.80 a gallon (ten times the cost) and that new home is about $300,000 (about ten times the cost). I'd love it if gas would go back to 38 cents, but I don't think housing will plummet to the $30,000 mark ever again. So... I guess that the higher price of fuel is now here and I must adjust. Maybe there's money in fuel storage as an appreciating asset? Ha! Maybe gas mortgages are just on the horizon? O boy, I'm getting dizzy!

dfb - some of the readers here probably think you are crazy. Me? I know that most everything you wrote is pretty close to the truth with regard to our governmental policy and the liberals shutting down the expansion of ANY domestic energy. They want to force their global warming garbage on us and force us into conservation at the cost of our capitolistic way of life. Kiss it all goodbye!

I am going to stand shoulder to shoulder with dfb and kwlincoln. Nothing more to add.

dfb, well said! How many here realize that China is drilling off of Florida? The environmentalists fight offshore drilling at every turn while China comes in and takes it.We definately need to conserve but we have no energy policy to deal with this, and we have known this was coming for many years.

There's that sucking sound again. Now it's just not jobs it's going to be oil to. Heck they will probably horizontal drill right underneath Florida. BTW do you have any links are reference to this Chinese drilling off Florida?

Cuba hired China, no surprise there. They are here to steal the oil while we are in Iraq to do the same thing, rich get richer and the poor population is growing like a cancer!
I am glad to be retired and not part of the new rat race to the bottom of the heap! I shudder as I watch kids working for less and less and without benifits or any pension, I agree that the middle class is being eaten alive and the mindset of America is in two camps the red and blue. America devided is in big trouble, our united way was always our strength and we need to get that back.

It will take vision and a new direction in Washington to change the course or we all will continue to suffer. 1-20-2009 a new change hopefully!

As I see it, there is no one running who cares first about his or her country. Who cares about the middle class. Who cares about bringing down the cost of energy. Who has an Energy plan. How many of us heard Obama say, "America is 3% of the Worlds' Population, and uses 25 % of the Worlds energy, Americans will have to get used to not driving SUVs, eating as much food, or having their tempurature on the thermostat set at 72 degrees"..He got applause for this. I am not sure this is the "Change" we want. Hillary seems to be in it for herself. I hear about her, not what she wants for us. McCain, I see very little difference between him and the present ....He won't close the boarders, he won't bring jobs back, he voted 2 times not for tax cuts...We really have no real choice and I am tired of Voting for the lesser of the two...I don't care if we had a Truman, or FDR or JFK or Regan.. But not one we have running now is what I would consider a "Statesman" or Stateswoman".. They are all in it for themselves...Just my opinion, not trying to make enemies...

Are these the same Chinese that have been a driving force in the areas of mining safety over the past 20 years? ("What? Tunnel not safe? You drill now!!!") And now they're drilling off our coast?

I wonder what Sharon Stone would say about this?
