I'm mostly a lurker and really enjoy and appreciate the information from this forum in many ways. I know this probably the dumbest question ever asked, but regardless I've read a lot of threads on this forum and other forums and really never knew what boondocking was. Can someone explain it and also how would you go about doing that using a PUP?
Thanks ever so much
Chav

It's where you camp and don't use external facilities such as water hook up, electric, etc. You take along your own water and use batteries or generator for power. Basically it's like tent camping with a few ammenities. Since you are in a pup you might want to purchase a small generator just to keep the battery charged and some extra jugs of water since your tank is probably small too.

Dry camping (also called boondocking) means different things to many people. The common definition I hear from people is camping in a location where electric/water/sewer connections are not available at each site. This definition is very broad and includes everything from camping at a commercial campground with centralized facilities to driving out into the woods and pulling off into the trees.
For us the latter is correct. We love driving into a National Forest and finding a nice place in the trees to pop up.
According to the Forest Service dispersed camping is the term used for camping anywhere in the National Forest OUTSIDE of a designated campground. Dispersed camping means no toilets, no treated water, and no firegrates are provided.

To a real boondocker it means a lot more than just setting up on a site with no hookups. It means dry camping "out in the boonies". Staying on a Walmart parking lot is not it.

Hear, hear! Dry camping is done in developed sites, devoid of hook ups. Usually there is a central water spigot and pit toilets.
True boondocking is going into the country and making your own camp. You have batteries for power and carry water. I use a 5 gal. bucket with a toilet seat attached for my potti. (Click my webshots link and see several boondocking photos,)

It certainly is not a dumb question! I've always wondered too. Thanks for asking.
It is good to realize that if love and peace can prevail on earth, and if we can teach our children to honor nature's gifts, the joys and beauties of the outdoors will be here forever.

Dry camping is setting up without power and water hookups. The terms is usually used for camping in designated camping areas that have minimal services such as a shared water spigot and some kind of toilet. Boondocking is a form of dry camping away from developed campgrounds with no services of any kind. There is an overlap in the terms that sometimes leads to confusion. The clearest use is to reserve the term dry camping for staying where some services are available but not attached to the camper. It could even be in your driveway.
