Can't recommend any in Wis. But as someone else mentioned is Lake Le Aqua Na state park in Lena IL. Sites are much better than the KOA. Other than a holiday weekend I've never seen if full. They have a small lake, fishing, camp store is not open, no one to run the consession, but firewood is available at the host's sites. Couple of small trails to go on. Very hilly for bike riding. Small swimming area. Galena is about 40 miles west if you want to go to Grant's home, or brouse around town. We were there Memorial day weekend.
Also Rock Cut state park in Rockford is very nice. They have quiet a few hiking trails, a swimming area, fishing I think. For a different time just down the road a few miles they have a short track stock car races. Good time and pretty cheap, you can check out the races schedule on line. If bad weather plenty of malls and movies in Rockford.
Ill. Beach state park is also nice on lake Michigan. Good for bike riding, paved path along the lake. Swimming at lake if water condition is good. close to Great America, Gurne outlet mall. Also jus about 10 miles up the road into wisconson is a tour of a Jelly Belly warehouse. take you around on a tram and show how they make the candies. Then of course they have candy for sale.
Some book on line some you have to mail in for reservations, the prices just went up.
Also on our way back from Nashville this year we might stop for a couple nights at Indiana Beach. Its an amusment area about 2-3 hrs from chicago.
Thanks everybody. We live about 20 miles east of Rockford, so we are pretty familiar with Rockford and Rock Cut... it just slipped our minds somehow. We are heading to Sugar Shores this weekend as my Aunt has a park model on site. Unfortunately, it's our first time this season, and our first time with the new towing rig. It's probably a good thing we're going local this run - just because we've been so busy and upside down lately we'll probably forget our trailer at this rate! Thanks again.
My wife and I, quite by accident found a little jewel, just south of Madison last year. The place is Lake Kegonsa state park. The campsites are great, heavily shaded and quite remote from one another. The lake there has some great fishing and swimming if the kids are into that. Bike riding is excellent also. We went into Madison to a street fair and really had a good time there.
Give it a try. I am sure anyone who likes to camp will like this park.
Just FYI, Lake Kegonsa is a nice park but there are no hookups at the campsites. Wyalusing is one of our favorites; the best sites in Wis. Ridge CG have no hookups either, and are right on the edge of the bluff - stupendous view! KampfireKid - have a great first outing, and many more this season!
