We camp with 2 dogs that stay tied to carriers. What I hate is parents who let small children come pet our dogs when walking. They assume the dogs will not bite and they might not. Please ask before petting I have no idea if they will bite. Or let your dog come smell mine. I have had to pull mine away from a fight. Not all dogs get along with each other. Just like some humans.
This isn't really a dog issue,it's a people issue. Some people think they just don't have to obey the rules. When they drive over the speed limit we don't blame the car, when they play their radio too loud we don't blame the radio and when they walk through our site we don't blame their shoes. But very often when someone has a dog we tend to blame the dog for the problems caused by the owner. These people who think the rules are not meant for them are just jerks!
Well I just have to chime in here.....
I just spent the last week end in a Kalamazoo Mi fair grounds camping area....
their were over 100 campers and well over 2000 dogs...
More dogs than any of you would ever run into in any camp ground....
It was an AKC dog show....
some campers were in so tight that they could not even pull out the awnings...
their were children from teens to toddlers...
dogs from toys to great danes...
bikes,mopeds,golf carts,scooters of all kinds...
and at night....
dead calm....
It was like you were walking through a storage lot with no one else around....
no dogs ran loose...
no children ran wild...
no one was bit...
no dogs were left barking...
no children were left screaming...
no one was bothered...
no one was thrown out...
no one was harmed...You know why?
WE SHOW RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER AND TREAT EACH PERSON FAIR.
If your kid is bad.... discipline them...
If your dog is bad.... discipline them...
If some one can't flow the rules...
DISCIPLINE THEM...If they still cant flow the rules they will not be allow to camp at the show sites any more...
Don't pick out one bad KID,DOG,or PERSON and then let that ruin it for every one else.....
Their are plenty of responsible "DOG OWNERS"...I just spent the holiday week end with a VERY LARGE number of them.
I would be happy to camp next to any of them again.
Your post title could have just as easily been...
Why some campers get a bad reputation"rant"
Oh and everyone new to pick up after their animals...Their was a bigger problem with Goose Poo than dog poo
Those Goose owners should be banned from every park in every state

See, you get it. Why can't others. Except in very rare occasions, it is always the owners fault. Unfortunately for me, or maybe for the dogs involved, I live in an area where people like to "Drop Off" their unwanted pets. As soon as we see them, we call the ASPCA. We do not dare feed or care for them, because then according to the ASPCA, they are ours. There are times in the summer when we can't safely walk, bike, or 4 wheel on our own property. There have been times where we were forced to put one down because it would attack. In my area it is legal to put down a feral animal that is attacking, or destroying your property or livestock. It is always a last resort, and I feel really bad when it comes to that. But I will not bear the cost for idiot animal owners who do not do the responsible thing. I have given animals the benefit of the doubt every time possible, and I have the scars to prove it. But just like RGar974417 stated, it is not the animals fault. They just end up paying the ultimate price.

EXACTLY RIGHT!
Not bad dogs for the most part; irresponsible people.
We love our dog just as we have our previous ones. And we respect the rights of others and the rules. Not that tough.
Some people have never learned the 3 R's - Respect for self, Respect for others, Responisibilty for our own actions.

Reminds me of our incident a few weekends ago. DH stepped outside our gate at home with our dog on leash, heading out for their afternoon hike. We live in a rural area and they were heading out the back gate which accesses a trail in the bush.
They were immediately confronted by an unleased dog, about 40 lbs. Yards behind the dog a woman was running up all in a panic because she feared our 100lb leashed boy was going to take a strip out of her smaller unleashed canine.
Her words as she rushed up to protect her dog were, "Only problem dogs are on leash ... your dog isn't vicious, is it?" DH replied, "No, my dog isn't." She asked why our dog was on leash then, and his reply was, "Because it's required by law." He said he thinks she didn't believe him ...
Believe it or not, some of the poop could be from cats. We are in Ocean Lakes and this weekend we had poop on our site and mat. Of course, we "assumed" it was dog poop. However, I noticed a cat that was drinking milk from a bowl that a well meaning person had put out for the stray and then he proceeded to come over to our site to do his business! So, just a FYI, if there are stray cats in your campground, it might not be from a dog!!!
I agree 100% and I think the retractable leashes should be band also people let out a lot of line so the dog can run more then when they have a problem they have noway of controlling the dog since the leash is to long. They say your dog must be on a 6 foot leash for a reason. I do own one of most lovable large teddy bears ever. He wouldn't hurt anyone and most people want to hug all over him. I keep him on a 6 foot leash when we are out, his size can be intimidating. I always cation people before they grab him that he has never bitten anyone but he is an animal so this might be the his first time biting someone. People tend to forget they are animals and are capable of attacking anyone or anything and need to be kept under control. I love our dog he fallows me everywhere but I really don't want your dog running around, I have my own.
