Any dog has the ability to do harm by biting or scratching or wanting to play no matter what the breed. You cannot restrain a dog 100% of the time without a leash. Other campers want to keep their dogs and selves safe.

At Cypress Woods campground in Ft Myers another lab off its leash ran over to my since deceased mother in law's 14 year old poodle with a heart condition to play and the poodle almost died. I do not feel I over reacted

Please have some respect for others in the public areas and keep dogs restrained when rules call for it.

Are you serious? What kind of harm? Oh a little bump or something? Cmon that's nothing more than a toddler can inflict. Do you have children, or grand children? Do you shoo them away if they come running up to you? Because they could trip and smack into you and cause more damage than a dog.

As for your poodle with the heart condition, was it on a leash? Nevermind it doesn't matter. What matters is you are overreacting completely and being very self centered. My post wasn't meant as some kind of attack, I was trying to shed a little light on the subject from another perspective. Your making an automatic judging based off a dog with a heart condition.

And again I ask you. How are you supposed to play fetch with a dog on a leash? How are you to keep them entertained? It's not like your kid's that you can send off to the lake or whereever to get out of your hair.

I dunno, think and do whatever you wish. I prefer to look at things from all sides before making a decision. As a dog owner I see your point of view, however selfish it may be.

Well I can truly say I have been in at least 50 campgrounds since the first of the year from Texas , north and east to virginia and up the east coast to maine and I have not been eaten by any dogs! I have not encountered any dog poop in our site, no barking dogs all day long ( maybe like ours a passing bark when someone or another dog passes thru) no wild dogs or without leashes dogs. And finally no unruly or disrespectfull kids, found a few being kids and they seem to be having fun tho. These were all types of places from resort style to seasonal campgrounds. Guess we have been lucky.

We don't get out that much since we are a few years away from being retired, but we have the same sort of experiences when we camp.... No trouble to speak of out of dogs, people and/or their kids. At least nothing like is described here on the forums. I suppose some might say we are living right, I say we don't look for problems and typically we don't find them.

I agree with the others though, if you have a problem with a dog or a child... it's actually an adult problem, either go to the source and have a friendly discussion or if you must, go to authorities to get it settled. No muss, no fuss.... just folks working together to get along. What a concept!

I'm sorry, I just have to jump back in to tell this story. Not RV'ing but this has kinda digressed anyhow.

When we lived in Estes Park, CO we had an acre; as did Bozo (that is the male human of the house) next to us. No fences or anything.

We had a 14 pound poodle mix; he had a Dalmatian. That Dalmatian was nearly as mean and big a jerk as his owner. In fact, the Dalmatian once kicked the******out of a pit bull. They were a real pair.

The Dalmatian, of course, was never leashed; just kinda roamed around with Bozo. We always had Missi on a leash.

Dodo the Dalmatian took a run at Missi once and we were close enuf to avoid an issue.

Well, one day I see Bozo and Dodo out so I wait to take Missi for her walk. When I don't see them I go out thru our garage and next thing I know here comes DoDo - seems they were in OUR yard behind our house.

Well, I always carried pepper spray as we have coyote issues. Dodo takes three runs at Missi - we are about 4 feet out of the garage on our driveway - and I let her have it with the spray in the face. Bozo goes ballistic! Turns the sky blue with his language; screaming and yelling.

Sends me a vet bill which I, of course, ignored. All the vet had to do is rinse the dogs eyes. But the bill was for stuff I never even heard of - I even expected dog mental anguish.

Then the call. Going to sue me! Let's see I tell him. He and his dog were on MY property so his dog could dump (which he never ever cleaned up), his unleashed dog (against the law) attacked my leashed dog, on MY property, etc.

I told him he might have a bit of a problem finding a lawyer for that.

Never heard from him again on that.

We still laugh about it all - not the attack itself but the behavior of both dog and owner.

There, now I feel better.

God bless - be safe.

I have been on three camping trips this year.
1st trip we had a large dog tied out at the next camper. owners left for work and the dog poop smelled very bad they never cleaned up after it. Would hate to be the next camper on that site.
2nd trip small poodle yapped all the time very anoying.
3rd trip 1 very large uncontrollable dog was terrorizing the campground. management asked campers to leave. The site to my left had a small dog that thought my tires was his personal restroom and a tree on my site was the proper place to poop. Owners would not clean up after their dog. I should not have to clean up after them.
Bottom line if you bring your dogs camping please keep them off my site. If you leave the campground please take the dog with you. And above all Please don't let your dog urinate or poop on the campsite I might be the next camper and I don`t want to be walking where your dog has been using the bathroom.

LOL . . . . kinda. I agree with you Susan, this subject has been thoroughly and completely talked to death over the years I've been around RV Pet Stop.

I knew the instant I saw all those unfamliar sigs on page one that the topic had been moved.

Well I just have to chime in here.....
I just spent the last week end in a Kalamazoo Mi fair grounds camping area....
their were over 100 campers and well over 2000 dogs...
More dogs than any of you would ever run into in any camp ground....
It was an AKC dog show....
some campers were in so tight that they could not even pull out the awnings...
their were children from teens to toddlers...
dogs from toys to great danes...
bikes,mopeds,golf carts,scooters of all kinds...
and at night....
dead calm....

It was like you were walking through a storage lot with no one else around....
no dogs ran loose...
no children ran wild...
no one was bit...
no dogs were left barking...
no children were left screaming...
no one was bothered...
no one was thrown out...
no one was harmed...

YUP!

It is very hard to explain to RV campers with dogs and without, JUST HOW CAMPING WITH A DOG CAN and SHOULD BE enjoyable for all.
We live it, breathe it and know that it CAN BE DONE, and on a MUCH bigger scale than any campground.

Over 2,000 dogs at a showsite. And double that of people and kids.
What ever venue, parking lot or fairgrounds usually over 200 MH's.
Average minimum of dogs per MH 4 to 6.

Morning and 'never' before 7:00 am, you will hear dogs barking as the day starts up, with exercising, feeding. Then all is calm all the 'rest' of the day WITH people and dogs walking between all the MH's, etc.

Evening, dinner time and exercising you will hear some barking. Then like an unwritten law made up by the exhibitors you will hear NO barking after 8:00 pm, and I mean NO barking coming from any of these MH's.
Owners then start to mill around discussing the day and then gather for campfire get togethers and are enjoyed by all with OUT the sound of barking dogs. Gee, a quiet campfire with a 1,000 dogs on site? YUP!

Sorry I 'know' it can be done and I have NO tolenence at RV campgrounds for barking dogs, loose dogs, letting your dog dump on my site and letting your kids run thru my site and continue to come up to my dogs when I have repeatedly asked them not to.

I can have a more 'peaceful' time camping at a show site with a 1,000 dogs where the OWNERS HAVE TRAINED THEIR DOGS TO BEHAVE, than at RV campgrounds that allow dogs with bad owners. The last show I was at had 400 MH's all filled with dogs!! And you could have heard a pin drop at night time.

RV Campground rules should read:
Dogs Allowed - Bad Owners NOT Allowed!

We too live the above scenario of being at a site with 100+ dogs (4+ dogs per person). Unlike bench shows, our sheepdog trials are on farm fields (private land) and when out (not crated or tethered) most of the dogs are off leash and under verbal control. The top handlers in our "sport" often walk 4-8 dogs off lead (where allowed by the rules/laws) at one time and have ALL under verbal control and can keep all within a few feet of themselves. At one of these my sleep was disturbed, not by any of the 100s of dogs but by local cats.

This level of control can be obtained, the owner must want it and work at it. I find those people who control their dogs also control their children and vise versa.

terrynjulia03 I do not want to offend you but your Basset is sweet to you but not to us, it is just another dog we have no attachment to. Just as ours is to you.

We do not want to see its owners breaking the leash rule (law in a lot of areas). Leash rules (laws) are very necessary not only for the safety and convenience of others but for sanitary reasons. How can you be sure your dog (no matter what breed) is cleaned up after in a public place like a campground without 100% supervision which is impossible if off a leash or other restraint.
You do not dump gray water on the ground because it is a rule (state law), observe quiet time rules, what is your problem with a leash rule?

And that is why the bad owners do it,,, just like this story you complain about violations and the management does nothing to them, they are never banned from a cg and all they do is frustrate the abiding dog owners. When will the cg management clamp down on the ones in their cg with complaints rather than the abiding ones trying to make a reservation.
