Started to full time in Florida in January and thought this was great. Now keep in mind, I am not retired, I along with the wife still have to work.

Thought 1: Florida has no income taxes, take home wage will be higher than in Ohio. It was

Thought 2: Will transfer license to Florida when Ohio plates expire in June. Not a problem - WRONG Before you can transer your plates, you have to have Florida certified insurance. Insurance in Florida is twice as much as what it was in Ohio. Transfering plate in Florida cost $125.00 for the car, $125.00 for the truck and $100.00 for the motorcycle. I decided to keep the Motorhome licensed in Ohio and keep my insurance there also. Then it cost $35.00 for each for plates, then it cost $35.00 for your drivers license. I figure by the time I am done, I will have spent around $1200 just to get everything transfered. (this includes insurance for 6 months)

Thought 3: Who had the great idea to move to Florida???

Live and learn, but the waether is great here in North Central Florida

I don't think you are being completly accurate. I went through the same change a few years ago. The insurance was not double . It was more but the coverage was more complete. Plate in Florida for the mh and truck are $43.00 a year. Motorcycle is less.

Born and raised in Florida. There must be something attractive here to all the people that are moving here (you came). I have no complaints with the auto insurance (5 vehicles) or tags after hearing some of my friends in California, Georgia and other states complain about the price of tags and insurance. Your location, Marion County (Ocala) does not have a high auto insurance rate compared to some of the other Metro areas of the State.

You are perhaps misrepresenting yourself to your insurance company. Wouldn't hard to find out, esp if you have both policies with the same company. Might they take that as an excuse to deny something? Who knows...

The first year vehicle tag costs are not so good (excellent compared to value based states like CA, GA, AZ, NE, etc.) but they are only for the first year.

Since you are the FullTimer, YOU had a choice of where you would choose to base yourself and where your vehicles will be insured. Some rural parts of Florida are a lot less expensive than Miami and other places. Some unexpected pockets may occur (Like Zephyrhills) where too many retirees file too many claims and drive the costs up. Ocala may be one of those places.

Also, there may (or may not) still be places like Miami and Jax where emissions inspections are required for tag renewals.

Consider relocating yourself to a better county in Florida, checking with your auto and medical insco.

This sort of thing has been discussed on these forums, but apparently not all folks do their homework. Thanks for bringing this aspect of choosing a domicile to the fore!

GA is dirt cheap, if you use Farm Bureau. (But it's for GA residents only.)

You will have a one time charge of $100 for your car, truck & motorcycle from out of state to FL. $29 for a FL title & a $12 fee for the title change.

They don't charge the $100 on a MH or cargo trailer.

The $35(My renewal was $20) for drivers license that are good for 6 years and then you can renew them on line.

For 1 car, 1 motorcycle, 1 DP MH and 1 cargo trailer my plates were $132.50 total last year.

If your OH insurance Co. for your MH finds out your mailing address is in FL. and you no longer live in OH. they will cancel your insurance. My IN. insurance did that to me.

If you keep the MH as a OH vehicle. If OH has a income tax, then they will want you to pay it on the money you made in FL.

If you are living and working in Florida, keeping your vehicle registered in Ohio is, I am quite sure, a violation of Florida law. Also, I am not sure how valid your Ohio insurance is since you had to tell a fib and claim your vehicle was domiciled in Ohio when in fact it is domiciled in Florida. Makes a big difference and they could deny a claim.

When we moved to Florida from Utah in 1984 we had to pay $645 impact fee on our car, it was later reduced and some got a refund but we were too early in the system and the refund didn't apply to us! If you take up work in Florida you only have a short period of time, something less than a month I think to change everything over to Florida. At one time the government used to troll the parking lots of businesses and factories looking for out of state plates whose owners were working. Same goes for kids as soon as you put a child in school you have to become a Floridian. Like everywhere else insurance depends on where you live, if where there are a lot of older folks you will pay more due to more fender benders!! It all revolves around money.

If your Ohio insurance is a regular car insurance Co. You will probable find in the small print on the policy that you are not covered for full time use. Better get it out and read it before you have a claim.

You need what they call Full Time insurance for the MH & not all insurance company's have it. It is higher cost then regular insurance anywhere.
