I have a Exilir ELX-45 inverter / charger in my TC. It is a one stage charger and will take 8 to 10 hours of charging time to bring the battery back up after one night of running only the heater.

I have purchased a new 100Ahr AGM battery and a new 20 amp 3 stage charger(Schumacher, SS-210). The problem is that the ELX-45 uses the same wire for both charging the battery and then reverses to feed 12V power to the rig. So I cannot disconnect this cable to wire in the new charger and I do not want both chargers feeding (charging) the battery at the same time.

Anyone have any ideas on how to make this work. Electricty is not my forte and would really appreciate it if you can keep it simple.

I went this route because of an article / post I read here last year but I have not been able to find it through the advance search.

Thank you in advance for your help!

I would return the Schumacher and replace the ELX-45 with a new multistage converter. Xantrex XADC40, PD9245, WFCO 9845 will all work fine. My preference would be the Xantrex.

I agree. But the WFCO would be my 3rd choice.

Find the circuit breaker that feeds the pre-existing converter and .. Turn it off

Or if it runs other stuff, locate the wire that feeds the existing converter and disconnect and tape it off

Some converters may have a 120 volt fuse.. Pull it (NOTE: 120 volt fuses are used in 12 volt circuits so do not go by the label on the fuse TRACE THE WIRE I suspect said fuse will be less than 15 amps, way less)

As for anything else.. Just forget the pre-existing, since it's turned off and diode protected,, It will electrically "Vanish" like magic Even if you can see it your "House" can not.

Dockside,
What if you wire the new Schumacher to the 12V side and run a 110 feed with access outside the camper so that you can plug it in only when needed?
The HOME stores and McMaster sell a "motor" connector that is a wall mount male end of the 110 outlet, with a flap cover, that you can safely plug the extension into.

Replacing the ELX-45 would mean complete re-wire of the rig central box which is a built-in unit. I just know that would be puzzle I would never get right.

If I do this... don't I lose the in-feed circuit as well? There is only one wire that comes from the batter to the ELX-45.

Problem is that when the generator is running or the shore power is connected there will be 2 chargers suppling power to the battery, the SS-210 AND the ELX-45. This can't be good.

I'd would not mind just pluging in the charger when it is needed but as soon as I turn on the generator the ELX-45 is going to try to charge the battery.
