I can't tell you about the Yammie but doing the valves on my 450r was a breeze. It uses shims of different sizes to set the valves. The worst part was the cost of the new shims.
It will be hard starting if the intakes start to close up. I think that bike will have the setscrew type tappet adjusters. I would look for something like junk in the carb or a dirty air filter. Start with the basic maintenance stuff. Those little bikes should run forever.

Why not start him in 2nd and have him shift once into 3rd.
Maybe after riding in 3rd awhile he'll get the feel, and like it. Then hopefully you'll be able to teach him to go through all the gears!
My son is now on a kx65, (moved up from a TTR90) sometimes he won't shift into 4th!
