The water in the toilet bowl leaks past the trap and down into the tank. As a result, I am getting some smell coming up from the tank. I have used a coat hanger to dig around in the slot where the cap slides into to make sure there is no "debris" in there causing it to not seal correctly. That did not fix the problem. Any ideas on how to remedy this short of installing new seals? Any good recommendations for something to pour/squirt in there that might help a "dry" seal expand and seal better? Thanks in advance.

Clean the seal by hand with a paper towel and cleaner. Then apply a coat of petroleum jelly to the complete seal. That will help if the seal is still fixable.

Thetford has a cleaning liquid gel type product that works very well to really clean the ball & seal. There is a tool that looks sorta like a toothbrush with very stubby, coarse bristles on a slightly bent end. You put the cleaning stuff in the bowl, let it set a few minutes, then scrub every surface you can reach - top, bottom, under, over, around - with the brush then flush & rinse. Ours had been leaking for a while - Tiffin gave me this stuff and it worked first time. It doesn't take much to interfere with the seal - a couple of bits of TP will do it, even.

Try cleaning with an old tooth brush and soap and water. Be sure to scrub all parts well to remove any build up. Be sure to discard old brush so no one uses it to brush anything else.

I always make sure I have a package of hobby sticks (from Hobby Lobby), and I use toilet bowl cleaner (the strong stuff, with acid). I pour about a cup of cleaner in the toilet and let it sit for a few minutes in order to break down mineral deposits (limestone, around here). I wrap a little bit of cotton cloth around the stick (previously called Popsicle stick) and scrub inside/beneath/on top of the rubber seal. I repeat the process one time. If that doesn't work,....replace the seal. It's not a difficult job.

When not in use I spray some 303 on the seal. It stopped leaking...

If you have a Sealand toilet they sell a cleaning kit. It consists of a tool that looks like an emory board. With the ball closed slide the tool between the ball and the rubber gasket. Scrape back and forth all around the ball. Yes, you can see the part of the ball when the ball is activated. You cannot see the sides. Multiple scraping and lots of water helps.

I took mine apart and found the sides were crusty. Cleaned with scraping and VOILA toilet holds water.

You may want to dump first then put 5 gallons of fresh water in and one deodorizer of your choice. Or position a fan above the toilet and blow into the bowl. Fumes will go out the vent stack.

Call NASA, they have a toilet problem at the International Space Station. They have a shuttle mission scheduled for a Saturday launch. Talk about Plumbers overtime, I wonder if there will be a fuel surcharge.

Oh yeah, the problem is in the Russian built part. I don't think they've been using indoor plumbing that long. Anyone have page 347 of the 1968 Sears and Robuck Catalog, probalby got flushed already.

We use silicone on the seal from time to time, keeps anything from sticking.
