Although, my toilet is far older than yours, I did the petroleum jelly thing for some time. I had to keep re-applying it. Finally I just broke down, removed the toilet, and took it in to have the valve assembly replaced. (I also had to have the water fill valve replaced).

After that, the thing holds water just fine.

The approved procedure involves latex gloves (Follow haz-mat procedure) and some material to clean the seal with (Toilet paper?) Turn off city water, Turn off water pump, Step on flush pedal, Clean underside of seal, release flush pedal and clean ball or slide As others have said lubricate (Long list of lubricants suggested, Silicon sounds as good as any to me, Vaseline is another I've heard but that's petrolum jelly and don't necessarly mix well with rubber)

When finished remove gloves following Haz-mat procedure (Clean to clean, dirty to dirty) turn inside out and seal in a plastic bag for disposal

Something I use is a bottle of dish soap the kind from Walmart that is EV friendly,it has a push down spout on top. Every now and then a small drop of the dish soap in the bowl will help keep the ball lubricated.I keep the bottle in the bathroom as it works great for your hands also.

Our Thetford will leak unless we let it close rather smartly. Releasing the pedal easily seems to keep it from sealing properly. It is kind of annoying to hear it slamming shut when someone uses it in the middle of the night.

kplender,
A petroleum base product will deteriorate your rubber seal even more in a very short time . I use this product Magic Lube on all my rubber seals. It has a Teflon Base and is just what the doctor ordered. Got mine at a plumbing supply store. Best of luck.

Cleaaning is good BUT your problem MAY be resolved by snugging up the "closet bolts", the two bolts that tighten the toilet against the rubber "doughnut" gasket creating a seal. Free & Easy to do BUT, Snug NOT Tight.

Try soaking with a vinegar solution, ours evidently had a mineral build-up and this cured it where scrubbing would not. Richard

Had the sme problem so I started with the bent clothes hanger routine then put transmission sealer in the bottom of the bowl and let it sit for a day. No more problem!

If I just run the toilet brush around the seal at the bottom when it leaks, seams to work for us. Make sure that you get the bottom of the seal. No big hazmat issue.

MY 2 cents. Just pour about 3/4 cup of cooking oil, Let it sit as long as you can. The oil will soften the seal. I have been camping since the very early 60's never replaced a seal yet. I use 1/2 antifreeze 1/2 cooking when winterizing works great
