Our Thetford will leak unless we let it close rather smartly. Releasing the pedal easily seems to keep it from sealing properly. It is kind of annoying to hear it slamming shut when someone uses it in the middle of the night.

My Sealand will do the same thing, when people try to "baby it". If you let off the pedal "smartly" and let it do it's banging thing, it seals. If you baby it, it leaks.

You didn't say what brand of stool you have. Based on the age of your MH if it is a Thetford Aqua Magic stool you can easily get a new seal & replace it (without removing the stool) at very little cost.

Click HERE for Thetford Aqua Magic IV parts & dealer list.

Using a granular tank deoderizer, sometimes causes ours to leak. I believe that some of the granulars get caught in the seal. After a good rinsing, all is well again.

A petroleum base product will deteriorate your rubber seal even more in a very short time . I use this product Magic Lube on all my rubber seals. It has a Teflon Base and is just what the doctor ordered. Got mine at a plumbing supply store. Best of luck.

Petroleum jelly will melt natural rubber, but the seal & modern o-rings are made of neoprene so they should be unaffected.

If you've tried the cleaning, hanger trick, vaseline, oil, etc etc and your toilet is still leaking, try the 'slamming' method. Kind of what the others were alluding to.

Basically put your foot on the pedal and release quickly so it slams shut several times. I had an RV guy do this and seriously I thought he was gonna owe me a new toilet! But it worked and I haven't had leak issues since.

Worth a try before you replace it. I, too, had tried all of the other remedies first. But slamming the blade a few times can help.

Standard Rubber Seals and o-rings are NOT made of Neoprene. They are made of Buna-N (Nitrile Rubber). Petroleum Jelly will NOT hurt them. Buna-N (Nitrile) rubber is designed for use in petroleum oils (i.e. hydraulic fluids) and grease.

Having said that, there are many types of "rubber" compounds used for seals and rubber parts - Buna-N (Nitrile), Flourocarbon (Viton), EPDM, HNBR, Silicone, Neoprene, Butyl, Natural Rubber, Aflas just to name a few. Each unique to application. Buna-N (Nitrile) being the most common.

See my profile and ask me how I know.

Trumpets and pedal steel, not your usual combination. Dobro here and a lap steel.

My toilet is sealed.

The other responses were interesting to say the least.

I had the same problem so I went to Camping World and bought the
2 seals and changed them myself by following the directions that
came with them. You do not need the one for the floor.
