LARGE vs SMALL: I had a aunt Genevieve living in Huron county , Ontario, farm community, purchased a "economy" car in 1957 for general transportation. Regardless who was at fault, her car became entangled with a standard size vehicle at a rural intersection. Needless to say who was able to walk away. Genevieve was a invalid for the remainder of her life. O.H.I.P. paid the expense for her partial recovery. On the Golden Gate bridge only last May 08, there was a head-on collision. Five cars became entangled with each other and one death occured and consequently driving a small car and not necessarily a economy low end vehicle. The driver was driving beyond the 45 MPH limit and the weather was windy and the bridge was swaying from side to side. The little car wasn't able to handle the conditions at present. Drive a small car according to the conditions and you will survive. I drive a full size sedan with a V-8 , four door, but I very much respect eighteen wheelers or other large vehicles close to me . Think about how you drive and maybe you will be around for the duration.

I had under 36,000 miles on my 2000 7.3 PSD Excusion when I traded it in after three years in Aug 2003 for my 2003 6.0 PSD Excursion that I sold last fall after four years and three months with less than 30,000 miles on it. Most of the miles on the 2003 were in it's first two years when diesel was under $2 a gallon and the last year it was used for only one long trip and just sat in the driveway and that was when diesel was $2 cheaper.

I just returned from a Honda dealer. My son has a Dodge 1500 with the Hemi. Nice truck and nice looking. The dealer said sorry that he couldn't accept a trade. He stated that he’s not accepting anymore trucks nor SUV’s on trade ins. He told me to look over there at the trucks and the SUV's that he's been getting in and he said that they are not moving at all.
The GM of the dealership is looking for someone to buy my son's truck so that he can accept a trade.
My son is looking to buy a Honda Civic Hybrid and there is a two month wait on getting one here and that is one that is what it is. No choice in color or features.

Nobody wants to pay much for Dodge Cummins pickups today so I don't think he will get much for his Dodge 1500 Hemi.

Unless it is raining, snowing, or other wise unfavorable weather conditions (which is seldom here), I ride the Gold Wing. Better than twice the mileage, and 80 cents cheaper per gallon.

Been doing just that mostly all along. To me driving a big truck to go pick up some small things at the hardware store is silly no matter the price of gas. I have also taken to gradually filling the truck's tank over several weeks thus not having to pump in over $100 from empty at one time. We use our Honda for commuting and I also ride my other Honda..a motorcycle. I don't feel as bad when we tow and use more fuel.

My "03" 2500 Ram Dodge CTD gets 23.5 mi/gal empty. It would cost more to buy a good economy car to drive around when stopped for a day or two than it would be worth. Oh, did I mention we move around a lot "on the road" full-timing. Dear spouse likes to ride in the truck with me. Don't know how I'd get the extra little car to my next camping site. I guess my trusty Dodge could tow it behind the 5'er.

I don't think you know what you are talking about either.
Lynn just reported getting into the mid-20s with his CTD.
CTDs and PSDs get up in the high teens and 20s mpg range. My PSD certainly does.
What mpg does your 8.1 3500 gasoline van get, towing & loaded?

I really love my Silverado...I have spent a gazillion dollars on it for upgrades, wheels, exhaust, leather interior, etc., etc., etc....ugh.
At 12.6 pg highway and 11 city, and 7.5 towing the 5th wheel, it only has 8,000 miles on it, and won't see too much more.
We had a couple of trips planned for the summer, but instead we found a campsite at a lake that we can lease for $900 a year...so that is where the 5er sets.
My daily driver is now a Lincoln Town car that gets over 22 mpg....not great but almost twice as good as the truck...dammit.

My Fummins gets better mileage than many V6 4x4 compact trucks (to the unending disgust of my Colorado-driving co-worker), at just over 21 on summer fuel. Not bad at all for a 3.5-ton longbed SuperCab 4x4.
Heck, it gets better milreage than the 2WD Dakota loaner I have.
