For 5 years I pulled a nice Outback 21 RS (about 4300 pounds) with my F150 Crew (rated for 8000 pounds - TW). Needs have put me into a nice Mountaineer 29 (about 7600 pounds). I upgraded the hitch to the proper size (leveler bars and sway control) and put new tires on the truck. When I pull the new rig on the highway it feels like the suspension or steering is soft and there is a lot of wind effect push and some sway issues. I was thinking about upsizing to a 2500 series with a heavier suspension and harder tires. Do you think the change is necessary or do I have to get used to pulling a longer / heavier trailer ?

I'd spring for the 3/4 ton.

Avoid the Ford 6.0 diesel. Should be fine with Ford gasser, Duramax or Cummins.

Just up sized from a 1500 to a 2500 gasser. I drove the V10 Ford and to tell you the truth I wasn't impressed. I went with the 2500 chevy, 6.0L. If you can afford it spring for the 3/4 ton. It will give you much more confidence and just be a much more comfortable ride.

What sway control do you have?
Did you put LT tires on the truck?
Have you weighed it to know where you are at including tongue weight?

You need about 1000 lbs. tongue weight for that TT...is your hitch receiver rated to handle that much?

I'd vote yes on upgrading...3/4 ton will do just fine.

Our F150 tows our 33' 6500 lb loaded Rockwood just fine, but I wouldn't consider it for your new Mountaineer, it's too heavy. A 3/4 ton diesel will work well for you.

I'm sure there are great deals to be had on 3/4 and up as well as diesels, new and used.
