We're planning to spend a month this summer in Wisconsin. I know there are great eating spots in WI. We really like small supper clubs or bar/restaurants. Do you have favorite places? Is there a specialty at that restaurant? Please share them. I've heard that Friday nights are a ritual in WI.

We plan to bounce all over the state. We would be happy to divert our track to hit a nice dinner or lunch spot.

Fitzgeralds in Genoa City, on the southern border (Kenosha County). Has a great fish boil on weekends!

Culvers anywhere. Fantastic burgers & frozen custard.

There is an Apple Holler just south of Kenosha right off I 90. Really neat atmosphere and great breakfast.

Guide's Inn in Boulder Junction is my all time favorite. There are so many great places to eat in Vilas and Onieda Counties I wouldn't know where to begin.

Golden Pines in St Germain is another good one. Plantation in Woodruff. Red Steer in Minocqua. I'll think of more...

Prairie du Chien has a couple good lunch spots, Eddie's and Simply's or go across the river to Mc Gregor, IA. Check out the onion rings at Old Man River or sit on the deck at Mr McGregor and have a beer and some pub fries as you watch the river traffic. Have a good trip.

Another good one in southern WI is the Stage Stop in Wilmot. It's in an old stagecoach inn, and is well known locally for steak & baked potatoes with at least 1/2 lb of butter on them!! It used to be very smoky inside (bar/restaurant) but I believe smoking inside has now been banned, so it should be a lot more pleasant.

We've been going to the Minocqua/St. Germain/Eagle River area for years, myself since 1994.

With the exception of Golden Pines, most of these places don't look like much from the outside, but don't let that stop you. Sometimes the food at these places are the best.

Also in St. Germain is Wolf Pack Cafe which is only open for breakfast and lunch but has the BEST food ever, and the owner kathy is a doll who treats you like family. You must have the banana bread french toast or blueberry pancakes for breakfast and the "Darn Good Soup" for Lunch. And don't forget the pie. Be prepared to wait.

I've also been told Red Steer is good, by another family that are repeat customers.

We liked Four Seasons off Big Arbor Vitae, great bar and food and view.

The Maple View Resort/Conover has a great Fish Fry. Go north on 45 from Eagle River. Look for the Maple View Resort sign on the East side of the road... Really yummy and cheap and a cute atmosphere at the end of a road in the middle of nowhere. Follow the signs or you will get lost.

Pitliks, great food and a lovely view. Ate there twice last year cause we liked it very much.

For steak, try MacGregor's Blink Bonnies on 70. Also be prepared to wait.

Under new management, the White Tail Inn on 70 was very good, ate there last year for the first time in years, pretty golf course view.

Also under new ownership is Fibbers on Big Saint Germain Lake, and though we haven't tried it yet it's supposed to be good too. When we were there a few years back it was just okay food with a nice locale, but the new owners were supposed to be making great changes.

On the ride up Hwy 51 is the Pioneer Inn in Westfield; the tradition in our family is to stop for lunch. The food is not what it used to be but you know traditions.....

Families will like Vinci's Hillside Inn near Sayner; they feed the deer and bear, and diner's watch the animals eat thru large picture windows. They have pizza and ribs, etc. but the salad bar is just delicious with all sorts of homemade salads. That is also a tradition of ours. Sometimes you do have to wait, but there is a bar adjoining.

Can you tell we eat out alot on vacation up there?
