The date code is CRITICAL to assessing the problem. The date code is a 4 digit number stamped on each tire, in the form wwyy such as 4607. This means the tire was produced in the 46th week of 2007. According to the independent tire shop I use (also agrees with others on trailer forums such as this), one should not count on more than 6 years life from a tire, FROM THE DATE OF MANUFACTURE; regardless of whether it has been used or even installed. Unknowing or unscrupulous tire dealers have been doing this for years. I was caught on my car's tires a few years ago. What I do now is have the date code of the tires entered on my sales invoice, indicating I know what that is and what it means.

There was a story just recently about tire stores (especially those associated with a certain national department store chain) having old (as in years old) tires in stock and selling them as new.

Are you sure that 80 lb is the right air pressure? Did you check your vehicle's weight and look it up in the Michelin chart (see link below)? According to the chart, 80 pounds is the maximum recommended pressure for those tires. I have similar Michelin tires bought in 2005, and a similar Class C, and the Michelin chart said that for my tires and weight, the pressure should be 65 pounds.

WAG and I do mean WAG. Tires constantly getting sprayed by city water where it sits, by sprinklers for example. More WAG, parked on dirt or grass, something leeching up from the soil. Michelin may have QC problems, but major cracking in one year, I don't think so.

Vic Michelin states (in writing) that starting at 5 years you should have the tires inspected yearly and, if still passing the inspections, replaced at 10 years no matter what. Ours are 6 years old and I just found some cracking along the tread side, not the tire sidewall.
