While out this past holiday I noticed many trucks and what few rv's there were on the road had slowed way down. This makes for a safer highway, so now if we can get those cars that travel at 80 & above weaving in and out of traffic to slow down and quit cutting us off we would all be better off.

May be happening in Michigan, but the trucks ain't slowing down in FL, AL, MS, LA,and TX. Have seen one truck going less then 70! Also found it a lot harder to pay attention at 60 then at 70-too many distractions due to the slow pace. But we managed another day at 60, won't get good mileage on next fillup-strong sidewind and going uphill.

I run about 60 but any slower and I get so bored I get tired and have to pull over. The roads were designed for 10 mph over the speed limit. You are not being unsafe by driving 55. I just cant do it.

Most efficient engine speed is not the same as best mileage - as it doesn't take into effect weight of rig, air resistance, etc. Its an engine sitting on a test stand being tested...
Don't be any more rigid about a low speed than you are a high speed. Drive smoothly with as few abrupt speed changes as possible. When restoring cruise control slowly accelerate back to within 1-2 mph of your cruise speed before hitting the resume button.

I can consistently get 9+ mpg from my 400 hp M11 driving 63-64 mph. For me, that's a great tradeoff between fuel savings, trip speed, traffic management, etc. That's 35K+ weight including the toad. I might be able to do a little better at 58-60 but I wouldn't be happy with my daily progress or traffic management.

Don't be fooled by a recommended speed for best mileage....Today's Allison is so smooth some people don't realize that at 55 mph they have not yet shifted into 6th gear.....and at 60-62 in overdrive you will get better mileage than at 55-57 in 5th gear...

That's exactly what DH says, and he has over 2 million miles in a truck, plus all the miles in the MH. He says the "sweet spot" on our DP is 62--anything less than that and it doesn't shift into overdrive or it continually downshifts. That seems to be the speed a lot of truckers are running, too--just came across AR on I-40 and it seemed we weren't passing or being passed by as many trucks as before.

Don't understand the 60 to get 6th gear. In the econo mode we hit 6th gear at 55!

Not sure where you were in AZ but we just drove I-40 from Amarillo, TX to Grand Canyon, AZ and saw one truck running 60, all the other ones were runnin an easy 70-75(except on some of the hills of course)!

It is tough driving 60 though, as you constantly have to watch for double lanes of traffic in your rear. Not nearly as many vehicles to watch for at 70.

I've always driven about 50-55, which is pretty fast for a rolling motel. Naturally there are some who disagree, like the the 1/2 double wides on a flatbed that pass you like you're sitting still and believe it or not...most don't even have a pilot truck ahead of them, but a lot of them have one following.... GO FIGURE ... I sometimes don't even notice they're coming until right beside me. But then they're not concerned with the same issues as I am.
Anyway, there have been many threads on this speed vs mileage thing, that the moderators usually close before long. I don't know the answer to that one either.
