Hey guys,

The gen in my 1991 Winnebago is a KOHLER 7000 with 520hours on it. It runs and works the overhead aircon, but tends to chug and surge. It doesnt run smoothly.

I took it to Camping World and they said they dont work on the KOHLER gens.

Any suggestions of where I could take it to have it looked at/service?

Also I have no idea if 520 is high, low or average hours for a gen of that age.

I will confess that I am mechanically challenged :-)

Cheers,

Mark

We're keeping our motorhome in OK and our Kohler genset was doing the same thing. The Kohler dealer in town did not want to work on RVs, so I called Coach-net and they referred me to a shop in Duncan, OK that was fantastic. If you belong to Coach-net, give them a call and ask about a service facility in your area, or if you want to drive to OK, I'll give you the name of the shop I used there.

Mark,

Just a little more info for you. I had a few conversations with the fellow who owned the shop in Duncan, OK that we went to before we took the motorhome down there. Our Kohler 7kw had 800 hrs on it when we bought the motorhome and now has 1100 on it. The mechanic said that the valves should be adjusted every 400 hours and if they are off, the engine will sometimes surge. There were no maintenance records from the previous owner. Since he had to pull the genset out to adjust the valves (no other way to get the sound shield off), he pulled the heads off to check for burned valves, checked the cylinder walls, and had to fabricate a damaged part that was NLA, In addition, one of the two propane regulators on our genset was bad also and he converted the two regulator system to a single dual stage regulator and gave us a credit for our cores. Once he got it back together, he load tested it to make final adjustments to insure it was running ok.
On top of that, he let us spend the night before he pulled it just outside his shop. Not only did he give us a power hook up, but he and his wife invited us to join them for dinner. After the genset was pulled, my wife and I took off on a camping trip and came back a week and a half later to have it put back in. I feel that Coach-Net really did me a favor by giving me the name and number of this shop. My genset was running like never before when we left the motorhome out there and we're looking forward to getting back out to OK in June.

Good luck to you. Hope you find a shop like the one I found.

I think 520 hours on a '91 is not a lot of hours. We have a '94 with an Onan 7000 generator in it, and it has 689 hours; I think even that is low. But it depends on how much dry camping you do.
