What if all you want to do is charge the group batteries? 1000 watt genset would be plenty for this?
I have 2 group 24's but haven't tested them drycamping yet. Drycamping is my preferred summer camping style. Drycamped in our popup w/1 group 27 for several days at a time ok. One fall, when the battery was 3 years old, camped in the Oregon Outback, and had it die on us after 1 night of cold temps after using the furnace to keep the chill off. Had to go 60+ miles to the nearest town to get the battery charged. We are very conservative drycamping. Using lanterns instead of the onboard lights at night.
Looks like I would need to find a 1000 watt genset w/the battery charging capabilities? or do they all have that, but just some have it setup easier?
Another vote for the Honda 3000. Ours is permanently (more or less) mounted on a platform I built over the tongue so the extra weight isn't an issue. Its served us well for three plus years now with most of our camping being on public lands. A couple of advantages of the larger size - Electic start, larger fuel tank (easily lasts all night) and runs our small AC in econo mode (quieter).

The only things I do, are switching the AC off while the coffee brews or the toaster toasts or the microwave runs. This is no problem for me, as those appliance don't run very often, and typically it's in the morning when the AC isn't needed much.
We just bought a new EU300is on sale, ($1,900 cdn) and it WILL be staying in the back of my F-150. I have a locking tailgate and hard tonneau, so I think if I lock it with a couple of cable locks for when it's running or cooling off, I should be fine. I'll just recruit of of the strapping lads in the hood to help me put it in the garage for the winter.
I went one step beyond and have a Subaru 4300is genset. Weighs a 167#. I have it semi- permanently installed on the rear of my TT so I don't have to handle it. This unit puts out enough juice to run everything as though I was connected to shore power. Electric start, hour and volt meters standard with remote start capability. Works well particulalrly in rest stops.
I got 2 x Honda 2000i's with the parallel kit.
Reasons:
1. light wt.(47 lbs ea) I can carry them one at a time (bad back and all that).
2. In winter, when I don't need a/c I can take only one.
3. With both hooked up, they are stronger than the 3000.
4. Very quiet and reliable.
