But our cats, even Melvin, have always come when called, that's what really scared me, when he didn't answer. I suppose that Melvin, finding himself contained in total darkness, assumed he was dead and buried. Poor little guy. You know what they say about cats and curiosity.

We live in the country and had the bad luck to put Rusty's (cinnamon Chow) fence in an area that is a terrapin migration route. The terrapins would come across the pasture, encounter the fence, and spend time trying to get through it. Rusty would dig under the fence, the terrapin would fall in the hole and Rusty would pick it up in his mouth. He carried it around until we rescued it and placed it on the outside of the fence on the other side. We rescued many terrapins over 15 years, and Russ never injured a single one. The migration route is apparently still the same - we still find lots of terrapins and always put out some canned peaches for them - hmmm......
maybe they aren't following a migration route - they're just looking for a peach handout.
Russ is waiting at the Rainbow Bridge - no doubt still giving the terrapins a hard time!
3 years ago my husband brought home an unwanted rat terrier/corgi mix who was only 10 months old and we were her 6th owners! The second day of having her in our home proved to be the funniest ever - I grabbed her toy, squatted down, then hovered over it so she couldn't see it and started laughing. Upon smelling it, she immediately jumped up on my back and began tearing out my hair; I was laughing so hard, my husband had to come and pull her off me! Do we still have her? Of course, we love her dearly even with all her different "behaviors"! Lesson learned: NEVER tease your babies!
Later this month is the three year anniversary of my Zack going to the Rainbow Bridge, so I'll tell some of his stories.
Not sure exactly when this one started... DH is a trained opera singer. Every time he would practice, Zack would run to his toy box, get a squeaky toy, run back to the music room, and "accompany" DH with the squeak toy.
Another Zack story..
I was wanting to try out a recipe to make homemade pizza on the BBQ grill. Made the dough from scratch, got all the toppings ready while the dough rose, and I was out lighting the grill while DH shaped the dough. I came in to find DH and Zack in a tug of war with the dough! He'd dropped it while tossing it, and Zack was right there for the interception. We got it away from him (yeast dough is bad for dogs), threw it away, turned of the grill, and very sheepishly went to the local Italian place for dinner. We knew the owners, who asked why were eating out on a weeknight, and had a good laugh when we told him why!

Our 'first' dogs always do seem to hold a special place in our hearts don't they?
Zack sure did look good at 12 years old! Thanks for sharing his stories with us.
You are very lucky to have had these two special pups in your life for 12 and 13 years!!
I hope that by my changing breeds I 'too' will be able to have a longer companionship with my dogs like you were able to. Sadly my Danes left for the bridge waay to soon.

Our first children were a shepherd mutt and a Rottie. 98% of the time they were perfect dogs. 2% of the time they would get a wild hair and do something that left us wondering.
Back in the 80's on the cover of the southern living yearly cookbook was a three layer coconut cake. One of my friends at work was drooling over the cake so I decided to make it for her birthday. So one night after work I made the three cake layers, let them cool, wrapped them up and left them on the counter. I was going to make the icing the next night and put the cake together. Well we get home from work and immediately see the saran wrap from the three cake layers on the floor. The wrap was in perfect condition but all the cake was gone. The dogs didn't meet us at the door like they usually did, instead they were hiding on the side of our bed so when we walked into the bedroom, they were sitting there facing us with their chins on the bed. Didn't have time to get mad because I now had to start the cake making all over.

After mischief, a neighbor's dog will go into her open dog crate before her human gets home. So when our neighbor arrives home and sees her dog sitting in her crate, she knows something is amiss.

Shortly before I was born, my folks had a harlequin Dane who died at 4 1/2. They swore off dogs... first because of the heartbreak, and then because they found out I was "on the way". I was 10 years old before they would even consider a dog in the house, and then, like you, they switched to toy breeds for the sake of longevity. I wanted a Golden Retriever for my 10th birthday, my mom came home with a Peke (the dam of the boy pictured above). I like the size, intelligence, and lifespan of corgis. I have a female who's 14 and a half and still herds like a teenager.
