When we go to Az & Ca this winter I would really like to buy an ATV or Jeep to play in the desert, but I do not want to bring it back to Canada for the summer. Quartzsite has storage at $30 month and I figure that I can leave it there for the coming years.

I have a BC driving licence and no status in the US.

How do I register it in either Az or Ca? I will want to drive it on the roads. To put it on BC plates requires import to Canada and an inspection that seems pointless when the thing will never come north of California.

Anyone done this? Anyone got any opinions?????

Thanks,Steve

All I know is, it costs an arm & a leg to register a vehicle in AZ, as they include a personal property tax of sorts in the licensing fee - it's tied to the value of the vehicle. I don't know what licenses cost in BC, but in AZ it could be several hundred dollars annually.

I think you would be best to contact the respective DMV or Secretary of State office for the states involved, and see if that is permitted. They may not allow registrations by non-residents, so you may have to buy your vehicle at home and bring it with you. Then you can just renew it each year at home, and bring the new plates or stickers down with you.

No problem registering a vehicle in the USA if not a citizen. A great many folks do it with no hassles. Just follow the procedures as any local would do and you done. In Florida I had to have a notarized bill of sale to present with the forms and got my reg right away. Foreign workers and expats have no problems, why should you? Works for me.....

Has any Canadian actually registered a vehicle in Arizona? I looked into it last year, and as far as I could determine, you need an Arizona drivers license to do so. I did hear that it was possible to set up a LLC (limited liability company) to get around it, but do not have any details....plus I suspect it would be a lot of yearly paperwork to do so.

In Florida they issue a 'Florida Only' drivers licence to Canadians so that they can purchase a vehicle. As I understand it you have to have a State licence in order to purchase a vehicle. No one that I know has had any problems in Florida.

My Canadian friend bought a Toyota Camry last winter in FL and he had no Florida drivers license. I have never heard of FL issuing a Canadian a driver's license.

What is the deal on insurance for a car bought in Florida by a Canadian?

I would not mind buying a "used" car for the wife to take shopping etc.

I aso have been told that one can rent a car from a dealer for a few months for much less than a rental office.

I inquired at Budget, they wanted thirty five a day for insurance!
