Tatest: most of if not of the photo managers do not create a seperate or single sub directory for their managing of pictures. If you use some software to download from the camera to either my picture (XP) or picture (Vista) than what they do is create a data base of pointers to the real picture. Most of them will let you delete pictures from their catalog, and give you a choice on whether you want to delete from the computer.
To prove my point, use lets say picasa to manager a couple of pictures. Then move one of them manually to another place. When you open Picasa, you will probably see some type of marker that indicates a broken thread.
When I plug the camera into the computer, a box pops up entitled "Canon Power Shot A-410". Under that there are 5 choices:
1. Import pictures (using Windows)
2. Open Device to view files (using Windows Explorer)
3. MP Navigator EX ver. 1.0 (using MP Navigator)
4. Omni Page SE 4
5. Canon Camera Window (using Canon Camera Window)
So which one do I choose? I've been using #1. Where they go from there is anyone's guess. They're certainly not in 'Pictures'! When I use the #1 route, I end up in Windows Photo Gallery---after I've titled the photo and put a date on it.

8.1 Van: I went to Windows Photo Gallery, clicked on the e-mail icon at the top and up pops a screen "attach files"--and below that is picture size, total est. size--and below that is 'attach'. I went back to my e-mail, clicked on 'attach files', clicked on brouser--and then what??? I'm lost at this point. When I went back on the previous screen from Windows Photo Gallery and clicked on 'attach'--I got nowhere. Sorry I'm so dumb-simple-stupid.
Jim: every program that you listed will have an OPTION or Preferences area usually under Tools, but sometimes under Files. When you go there, just look at each tab and one will have where the pictures have been going, and you can change that to wherever you want.
To find where you pictures have been going, do a search for .jpg files. Search will find them all for you and you can see exactly where they have been going.
What is confusing, is that the default for MPG is Pictures. If you have changed that I can't help you any further.

I'm sorry to report that I've tried all of your suggestions but still can only send the pictures I took in the last 4 or 5 days OR the ones that I imported from XP on my old laptop under 'my pictures'. I'll keep working and referring to your suggestions (I printed them all out). Thanks much. Jim
If you want to email a picture without uploading the picture to your computer---I don't understand why you'd want to do that, but that's how I interpret the OP---here's what you do (I have XP, not Vista, but I imagine the process is similar):
1. Open an email
2. click down in the body of the text
3. Click to insert a picture
4. Click BROWSE
5. Browse your way to My Computer
6. Continue Browsing to your memory stick (or whatever)
7. Click on the particular picture you want in the email.
