Long long ago when we had the miniature poodle and traveled by car, well we didn't ask, and they didn't ask us so we just paid for the room and the poodle stayed with us.

Quote: We have been staying in the cabins at the KOA's.
Many of the KOAs don't allow pets in their cabins. A few do - the North Little Rock (AR) KOA has 2 cabins where pets are allowed, and 2 or 3 others where they're not. But most we have encountered don't allow pets in them.
After hours of searching for dog-friendly accommodations, we usually only found very expensive places. We tried a few -- it was nice, but too much money for just one short weekend.
Sooooo....we bought our small tent camper. We travel 5 times as much now -- and no worries about dog-friendly. Our opportunities have increased, now that we have the Big Canvas Dog House on Wheels

Most Motel 6 and Best Western motels will accept pets. Another good place to check is: PetFriendly.com
Like others have said however, many of the places that accept pets are not always the nicest motels and it seems like the pet rooms are also frequently smoking rooms. Travel with pets was one of the reasons that we purchased our RV.

Before we got our motor home we stayed at Residence Inns by Marriott and always got suites and used the do not disturb signs without a problem. They always welcomed our two dogs but there was a "Pet deposit" which was anywhere from $75 to $150 per stay. If we were staying a week or more it bothered me less than if we were just staying the night.
Once when we stayed for several weeks I noticed that they would work the "pet rooms" down the hall then to the next floor. As the pets checked out, a carpet cleaning company would come in that day and clean the carpets. This continued down each hallway. This way, the management got the "pets" to pay for their carpet cleaning.
Now with the recent report that there are meth labs using hotel rooms and when they leave the room it is somehow contaminated, I think I will keep my RV.

Do you have room for a child? Consider fostering/adopting a child. Thousands of children are in need of a loving family.
Gary sorry to hear things haven't went the way you had hoped, especially since you were so excited about getting your FW.
A few years ago, when we traveled with 2/3 schnauzers, we stayed at various hotels, which was our reason for purchasing our Cameo. Most hotel chains now allow dogs; and since you have a one small poodle you'll have no problem with size/breed/quanity restrictions.
Based on our past experiences:
There are some places who allot X number of rooms as pet friendly; these rooms can fill quickly in popular areas so stop for the night early. Many hotels tack on surcharges, which range from $5 to $50 per pet (although I've seen one who wanted a $100 non refundable deposit per pet). But the biggest problem we encountered was the type of room we were given. The hotels had a very nice lobby and weren't cheap by any means, yet the pet friendly rooms were on the nasty side (strong deodorizer, stains in the carpeting, outdated, etc). Our dogs, like yours, doesn't shed; but other dogs who had used the room before us did. At one hotel I watched as our dogs "tracked" (which explained why the room smelled of deodorizer). Also beware of fleas; although you might use a product such as Frontline, the person before you might not have.
We've used the "do not disturb" sign and left the tv on when leaving them for a short period. But with that said I would bring a collapsible crate for her. If housekeeping were to open the door by mistake your furbaby would be gone (I've heard of this happening). Also as somebody else posted, there's no telling what the occupants before you might have dropped on the floor (medicine) or the type of chemicals used by housekeeping. The crate will protect her and give you peace of mind.

I have for years stayed at motels, hotels and B&Bs with my dog(s).
I have never left them unattended for more than a couple of minutes.
1. It usually is against the rules, and if they start barking - out you go!!
(You WILL NOT get your $$ back).
2. Sometimes - for whatever reason- the pets are not comfortable with the room. Leaving them alone could really raise their stress level. Aside from the well being of the pet, this could result in room damage - there goes $$$$! (of course, a crate would stop that, but if the dog is freaking, it could hurt ITSELF -and I don't have to tell you about the $$ that vets will take, or how bad you will feel).
3. If the dog isn't in a crate, and someone strange walks in - well, ALL KINDS of bad things could happen.
4. I think of my responsibility to my pets a lot like children - I wouldn't put them in hot cars, or leave them alone in strange environments, etc. I understand that means I might have to get a meal to go, or whatever else I might have to do - but their companionship far outweighs the "sacrifices". If you feel that they are a burden to your traveling lifestyle rather than an enhancement - as others have said - there are some fantastic kennels out there!
(of course, they want $$ too)

I think you hit the nail on the head! Our last straw was in the summer of 2006. On our way back home we stopped at a Florida Best Western and after being charged $208 (that was after our AAA discount)we were given the keys to our "pet friendly" room. Once in the room we began to look around and I noticed little things that didn't seem very tidy (I confess to being a picky housekeeper), but again it was getting late and we were tired. The next morning, when getting ready to take a shower, I saw a quarter sized gob of goop from somebody else's soap on the edge of the bath tub; we also noticed the chair had what appeared to be spilled (and dried) Coke on the arm and someone's ashes under the nightstand. I went to the front desk to voice my concern and was told they would forward my complaint to the manager but could do nothing more.
Once home, and not hearing from the hotel manager, I sent a complaint to Best Western's main office. They apologized and said they would work to resolve the problem; their action was to have the hotel manager call me. She did call the following day and during our conversation she apologized and said the person working the front desk had made a mistake. She explained that we should not have been assigned this room b/c "it was on the maintenance list"; in other words it had never been cleaned after use from the person BEFORE us (although when we walked into the room the bed was made and fresh towels put on the rack). The thought that we had swapped DNA with the person who stayed there before us grossed us out!!! She said b/c we paid in cash she couldn't give us any type of refund or discount so instead she offered us a free night at the SAME hotel (600 miles from our house); as if we wanted to stay there again.
This wasn't our only negative experience with "pet rooms" but it was the worst. Although a close second was finding some type of rodent killer tucked under some furniture, which could have been fatal had our dogs found it first. A few days later we began shopping for a travel trailers and we haven't looked back since.
the site is pet friendly.com, will give you a list of your area of travel. prices, parks its a great site. i have went crosscountry around motel6 routes, they most all take pets. not a fancy hotel but it worked.
