I'm looking for a Garmin GPS and am trying to find out which models have the car, truck, bus mode. The Garmin website does't list this feature and the salesmen I have talked to were unaware of this feature. In playing around with some of the display models I have found it on a couple of the higher priced ones, but wonder if it is on some of the less pricey others too.

Just be aware of what Garmin uses as a definition of truck and bus routing, especially if you are concerned about low bridge height info.

From Garmin's website:

"Truck: Will provide major road information. Will attempt to keep you off parkways or small streets where it would be hard to turn around with a bigger vehicle."

"Bus: If possible will designate you on a particular areas bus route. Changes expected speeds/arrival."

"Note: The truck option will NOT give low bridge information or weigh stations. This option is intended only to keep big vehicles off smaller roads and is not intended for Over-the-Road Transports."

As I understand, the Bus routing option also does not give low bridge height info., as one Tour Bus driver discovered a few months back. He set his Garmin GPS for Bus routing, and promptly hit a low bridge overhang along the route. The driver said that he assumed Bus routing took low bridge height info. into consideration when routing, but Garmin stated it was never intended for that purpose.

Hi Karen,

I have the Garmin Nuvi 350 and it has those settings. I have mine set on the "truck" setting. And so far that has served me well. My son just bought a TomTom from Buy.com (model 510 I think), it has a nice size screen and features, cost him $239 as it was a factory refurbished unit with same guarantee as a new one. The searching & research can drive ya nuts.

My Garmin 650 has the Truck and Bus option for routing and I am very satisfied with the unit.

My Quest has the options. I find Truck + shortest route + avoid superhighways, gives excellent, scenic results.

The Quest can run on its internal batteries & even has a 'walk' mode.

My Street Pilot 2610 and even older GPS V have the car/motorcycle/bus/truck routing option. As previously noted, it will not keep you off routes that have height limitations.
