Thank you for all those responses, something for us to think about for sure.... We will defintely give Skype a try too, but have been told that our Hughes Net satellite connection may cause some lag in the voice over... but still, worth a try ..

I have Huges Net Satellite internet and use Skype. All of our relitives won't use it, due to the delay. I talk to two friends using skype, but they have used communications that you had to say over after your transmission. If you are on at a peak time and they cut your speed back, it can be a problem with the limited upload speed.

I'm not sure this helps....but this is what I do.
i always need to be available by phone.

When in US I use a US phone...Verizon
When in Canada I use a Rogers Pay as you Go Phone.....I'm in Canada about a month/year.....no month fee and no contract
Usually I just take incoming calls and text message for people that call my Canadian Phone...
It has free nights and weekends, and free unlimited voicemail....and that is really nice.
A text message is 15 cents to send and free incoming.
Long Distance to the US is 66 cent/ minute....but I rarely call the US...usually just take calls...

It works great.

Maybe a US Pay as you Go type phone would be good for you too....

Oh BTW, my Rogers Pay as You Go phone can be used in the US on the Cigulare/Att network.....but it's $2.99 a minute.....a bit steep but it does come in handy.

From the US...YES!
let me clarify what I do and how well it works for me....
BTW...I got my Rogers Phone when they had a special with a $80 rebate.....and that was well worth jumping on...also...Rogers wireless is the only cell coverage where I go camping.

If I call the US using the PAY AS YOU GO phone from Rogers...during the day...it's 39cent + 66 cents/minute = ($1.05/minute)
If they call me during the day it's (39 cents/minute.)

If I call during evening + weekends it's 0cents + 66 cents/minute.= {66 cents/minute)
If they call me evening and weekends it's (FREE.)

So I usually text message someone if I want to talk...and have them call me.....

Rogers has different plans...but the one I have works great!
If you have leftover minutes and you call they will keep them valid for more than a month.....They are very customer friendly.....much better than Verizon here in the states.
