I'm a regular DirecTV subscriber. Last summer I bought an additional dish/tripod etc. to take along on our camping trips. Since then I have gone the HD route and upgraded to an HD/DVR receiver. My question pertains to whether the new receiver will still work with the old dish and is there anything that I need to be aware of? DirecTV told me it would cost $5/month to keep the old receiver activated, but why if the new receiver will work. I understand that I will not receive HD reception.
Also, would this setup work after February of next year.
The new receiver will work with a one, two or three lnb dish (assuming you have the new Slimline dish now), but what a hassle taking it in and out of the house. It's just so much easier to have two. With a 3lnb dish (again, you don't say what you have) you will get the HD channels in the 70s. A tech told me the convertor box thingy that is also part of the HD installation will not work with older receivers.
And the February thing has nothing to do with Directv. That's only OTA broadcasts.
I just got my new HD yesterday, and boy it's nice, but I hate that remote control. The channel selector button is too far down on the unit and it hurts my right thumb to bend that far, so I use my left hand. Trying to replace it. I liked the old Hughes HIRD remote much better - especially with the 9 channel quick selector insert.
BTW - there's no such thing as an analog dish.

The new receiver will work with it.. but not well (you will get only "SD" channels (The old 4x3 format channels like you get Analog) and perhpas a few HD's if you re-point. But changing channels means you need to repoint.
And none of the HD channels that hang out on the new Ka band birds will come in at all. That takes a Ka band antenna
The new "Slimline-5" is a dual band antenna as is the even newer (Slimline 3) (Which I don't think is out yet)
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business John is Near Kenwood TS-2000 housed in a 2005 Damon Intruder 377
Well, if you aren't going to have HD in the RV anyway, why wouldn't you just leave the old receiver in the RV for $5 a month ? But then, I guess I don't understand the question either.

I have the little D-12 receivers, and the remotes are also of a terrible design, all the channel buttons at the very bottom of the remote. And that not saying that their fav chan setup is any better.
