I have never seen any of those messages in my life.
I would rather my my software from a software vendor instead of from an Apple hardware vendor. For a comparison PC, I can't even find one that is as small as that $600 Mac. 13 inch screen. Talk about going backwards. I might get my Granddaughter one of those to replace her etch a sketch.
Actually I've worked on all platforms for many years, and EVERY time I've had to fix someone's PC with Vista I've had to deal with those annoying messages. Maybe you know how to turn them off for yourself but the reality is most people don't so most people with Vista DO have to deal with those messages. With a Mac you can afford to be naive because not to much can go wrong. With a PC people who don't now what's going on often get in trouble. Just this week there was a post on here about someone who got a pop-up warning them of an infection and they tried to follow the directions inadvertently installing spyware in the process. You may be happy with Vista but I think the average user would be safer on a Mac.
And let's look at that $600 PC. Oh, a Celeron, how great! Or maybe even a Pentium Dual Core, excellent that's only 2 years old, maybe.
That $600 Mac mini comes with the latest Core 2 Duo - and it's small enough to easily carry back and forth between RV & Home.

AVG Free is not free any more, it is $ 54/year. Id try Trend Micro P-Cillin.
The only reason Apples are free from viruses is because the virus authors arent interested in a small harmless market. However there is no inherent protection in OS-X and when the viruses do start, the results will be devastating. Same with Linux... which is based on the same operating system as OS-X.. Unix.
The 'run this program' prompts in Vista re user-choice, just lower the warning thresholds and dont listen to Mac people on the subject of Windows.

and either of those are perfectly adequate for 90% of the people, excluding nerds and other oddballs.

AVG free certainly is free. it's a little tough to figure out how to get to the free one download however.

Best computer protection? Truthfully the best protection is using common sense.. Don't let any pop up tell you your running slow (its a trick) or have a virus. Don't believe everything you read in an email and certainly don't get click happy.

Linux in general won't have a virus or spyware problem. However, if one of the distrobutions grows very popular (that is to the level of OSX and Windows), but since their are so many distros no virus could be coded to infiltrate more than one particular distro. Mac on the other hand will see more and more viruses as they become more common place.

Most people who know anything about computers will tell you that Macs are far better than PC's.
Sure they cost more, but the extra cost is easily made up for in productivity.
My Mac hasn't had a problem of any kind in over 6 years, and I don't even think about viruses. I haven't spent one minute trying to fix anything gone awry with my Mac...and I'll bet that there's not one PC user out there that can say the same.

Well, you have found a PC user who will attest to the same. I have never had a problem but do practice safe computing. I do run with some safeguards in place (both hardware & software) and run Bi-weekly checks to ensure things remain clean. I DO NOT use Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, etc. etc. I have used Internet Explorer initially back in the mid 90's if I recall and also have used Opera, Netscape Navigator, Netscape Communicator but currently I use Firefox (The best rated by me) and my email client is Thunderbird (also best rated by me).
