A friend just bought a nice ( for its age) Mallard; clean and in good shape. Stove and frige work well, don't know about the furnace; however, the Atwood 6 gallon gas water heater won't light.
There does not appear to be any gas going to the unit (gas goes to the stove and it works). Is there a safety feature that precludes the gas going to the unit if there is no water in it? May still be in bypass.
We've called it a day and will attack it tomorrow afternoon.
Any help would be appreciated.

Either You are either not holding the button in while lighting or you have a bad thermocouple.

Maybe that's the problem - what button? And - where's the thermocouple?

There should be a button or dial that has a few positions on it that is located right next tot he gas burner in the water heater compartment on the outside side. Usually a pilot position where you push either the dial downward while in pilot position or a button right next to it. Push down and lignt the pilot and continue to hold the button for at least 30 seconds. Then slowly release it and see if the pilot stays lit. If not try again but hold for at least 1 to 2 minutes. If that also fails it probably is a bad thermocouple and will require replacement of it. It is a device that when properly heated expands and opens a switch in the gas valve to allow gas to flow and heat the tank. (the explination is overly simple but to give you an idea how it works). If the thermo couple is bad it will not trip the switch in the gas valve and will not allow any gas to flow, therefore it will not light or stay lit.

Was looking for a "RED" button - duh - pushed the "Off-ON-Pilot" button, held it in for thirty seconds and the rascal lighted.
Thanx!!!
