I have three dometic 15000 btu penguins and have had two go out in the last three months. Have any of you had any problems with your A/C' s. The compressors keep locking up just after the unit freezes up. Dometic wont help.

We went through 3 Dometic A/Cs in the 1st year with our coach, same problem. Those 3 were replaced no questions, under the original warranty, and we made sure we got the 3 year warranty on the 2 that are on the coach now. According to Monaco, Dometic had a bad batch of A/Cs in 05 and 06 and they replaced way more than was expected as a norm. I would work on Dometic a little harder.

Why are they freezing up and what do you mean Dometic won't help? Did they say to call someone that cares or is it that they can't diagnose the problem over the phone?

OK, lets look at HOW you describe your problem. "The Compressors keep locking up after the unit Freezes up". Now, Compressors WILL OVERLOAD and lock out if the evaporator freezes up (No air flow) and the Amp draw goes up the the compressor overload switch kicks out. THAT is not a problem of defective compressors, but a problem of either installation or NO Freeze thermisters connected or installed correctly. As to Monaco stating that Dometic had a bad batch in 05/06. That is BS as Monaco and their tech service has NO CLUE as to componenet failures on supplier components. Not calling the poster a liar, but if Monaco told him that , Monaco is lying to push a problem onto someone else. Yes, We sell both Monaco and Tiffin and I service both, so I would know if Dometic had a compressor problem. Dometic DID have a fan motor problem on the Penguins from about 2001 to 2006. You need to address the freeze up problem to find your cure. Doug

The two units that have failed worked fine and then they would ice up and drip water. A few weeks later when I turned the units on the compressor would try to start and it would sound as if it was locked up and then the motor starter would catch fire. As for dometic I purchased my coach with 6000 miles on it and it was a easy out for them. I have dometic fridge issues as well, so basically I have to change three a/c's and a refer at my cost with no help from dometic or tiffin. Since we are talking about this who makes the best A/C's, since I am not wanting to change again at my cost.

If it was my nickel, I would take the coach to a good repair facility and find out exactly what the problems are.

Motor starter catching fire?

If the units are icing up, you have an air flow problem.

Mileage has NO bearing on Dometic warranty. They have a 2 year Part and Labor and the 3rd year is part only. As to reliability, Dometic and RVP and Carrier all make good units. If you change brand you will have to change controls and wall Tstats AND run new wall Tstat wires since you probably have the LCD wall Tstat from Dometic. Doug

If he is in Florida he is dealing with very high humidity. Try turning you fan on high instead of auto and see if that helps. It may cure your problem same as the other air problem on here.

I love it when one tech from one dealer calls the manufacture, with 3 major service centers a liar, or trying to push off the problem on someone else. I'm sure Monaco and their 3 service centers see far more problem Dometic A/Cs than the one dealership sees.
