I personally have a thing for ocean freight companies, REIT's, and gas & oil LP's. I'll collect those dividends and distributions all day long!!!!
Add to that coal LP's, and you will have an excellent ROI.

Now, if I was forty with a good income and little debt, then I would see things differently....."

If one is in something close to this position, I'd have to agree with Skid Row Joe....now is a darn good time to be in stocks (or stock mutual funds if one is not ready to try to make individual picks).

My portfolio is significantly in mutual funds, but some of the individual stocks I have are oil cos. and service cos. that support the oil industry...I think there is still a window to make a few $$$ in that market sector. The window is going to shrink, though.

Don't forget about ETF's. I personally don't care much for mutual funds due to expenses, but I have a couple ETF's that are oil and currency based (Euro). Very low expenses and can be traded intraday.

I've got to agree with PA12DRVR on his sector of investment. The service sector, all huge international companys and firecely competetive, of the oil industry can be a serious money maker. There are 5or6 companys that rise and fall almost in unison + ther range of change can be significant,6 to 10% over several months. I've even printed out their monthly/yearly performance on transparent overlays and layed one on the other. Pretty much a single line. Just have to be patient, read the industry newsletters, they're out there on the net. Had a lot of fun and made some good profits figuring out where the peaks and bottoms of the valleys were.
Now my money is in an IRA 80% Corporate Bonds and 20% stocks. Still making money, just not getting rich. Biggest thing is having little or no debt going into retirement.

You you my friend hit the nail on the head. Debt and retirement has been the down fall of many people. Debt free and good health insurance makes me sleep well at night.

Well... The business I"m trying to get in is basically helping people retire debt free with a decent investment package.. So I agree with you C.D.

The twenty four hour news cycles are driving and moving many things on raw emotion. Volatility can be dizzying and rewarding.
