I come in from Elkhorn side and the roads are not that bad IMO. As for the sites I have camped there every year for ever it seems. The sites along the outer ring among others are pull throughs and offer no problem. They do not take reservations but never turn anyone away. They will find a place for you even if it is along the road in the campground. Probably in time that will change with a central reservation agency. I have camped there in a 5er, TT, Class C, and a Class A. As I married a gal from that area I am required to attend yearly 4th of July family reunions.

I agree with Carter Caves State park.Very nice park. Also Boonesboro State park. Decent campground plus a nice recreation of Boonesboro Fort where Daniel Boone lived.

CAMPING HOOSIERS - I live in SW VA, about 12 miles across the border from KY. We love Natural Bridge State Park in Slade (about 45 minutes east of Lexington on Mountain Parkway, off I-64). We always stay at Middle Fork Campground. As stated above, the lodge has pretty good food, even though it is a buffet. We also have travelled to The Breaks on the VA-KY border. The roads are curvy, but the road coming in from KY has been improved in the last few years - it is still curvy and narrow, but it is BEAUTIFUL. Coal trucks and school buses travel this road year round, so it can be negotiated with your camper, but you will need to take it slow. Even if the speed limit is 55 mph, you don't have to go 55! 45 mph is a very good speed to get there in one piece and to still have a clean seat in your TV. No, the roads are not the flat four-lane highways you have in IN, but they are pretty good roads for Eastern Kentucky. If you don't want to go that way from Elkhorn City, you can go in from Haysi, VA Those are also 2 lane roads that coal truck and school buses use every day. The scenery is worth traveling on a bad road for 10 miles, the rest of the trip is pretty decent roads.

I have camped at Koomer's Ridge National Forest Campground in the Red River Gorge. There are no hookups but the scenery is spectacular; high cliffs, stone arches and the Red River. This campground is just a few miles from Kentucky's Natural Bridge State Park. I have also camped at Carter Caves State Park and this is a very good and interesting park. They do have electric and water at Carter Caves.
Happy Camping,
Mike

You've already got lots of good advice. Let me throw in:
Big South Fork - Blue Heron: Big South Fork is beautiful and remote. Waterfalls, hiking, and an abandoned coal mining camp make this an interesting and very scenic destination.
Dale Hollow - if you're looking for fishing and boating, Dale hollow is one of the prettiest lakes in Kentucky.

Natural Bridges is the perfect state park except for the campsites. Cave Run near Morehead is a great campground as is Holly Bay. Zilpo is nice but a long drive back. Koomer Ridge is in the midst of dozens of arches but does not have electricity. Blue Heron is another place we return to every few years. All three have arches and great hiking but Natural Bridges and Koomer Ridge are in the best area for both. Cumberland Falls SP is nice also but they skimp on the campsites.
Go to the websties of the Daniel Boone NF and Big South Fork National River for more information.

Hi folks!
Thank you for all of the great suggestions.
Right now, I'm looking at going to Jenny Wiley SRP for a few days then on down to Breaks Interstate Park.
Anyone ever drive that fifty or so miles between Prestonsburg and Elkhorn City??? How are these roads for RV travel? It looks a little rough on the map!
ALSO... anyone know the Jenny Wiley SRP Campground? Looks like a lot of sites available for reservation right now. Can anyone recommend some favorite sites? Big, Flat & Shady are some of my favorites!
Thanx!

Does Paintsville Lake have a nicer campground than Jenny Wiley SRP? I see that Paintsville has full hookup sites.

From Prestonsberg to east of Pikeville is 4 lane very good road. The crooked part starts when you turn off that road.
