I'm doing some trip planning for a tour of Eastern Kentucky. We want to take a 10 day trip over there around the end of July before the kids get back into school.
I need your help! This is an area that we have not spent any time in and need to know all of the cool places to see!
For the purposes of this trip, I am defining Eastern Kentucky as east of I-75 and south of I-64.
We do not like commercial campgrounds and prefer to stay at state and or federal properties. The more scenic the better and huge extra points for water front or view campsites. As far as hookups needed... well electricity is nice but not required.
I certainly appreciate any thoughts and suggestions on places to stay and attractions to see / visit. Also any "do not miss" kinds of dining establishments.
This is one of the things I enjoy most about RV travel... planning a trip to somewhere we have never been! I love it!
Thanx!
Jeff

Carter Caves State Resort Park at exit 151 off I-64. We have stayed there, and it is very nice. Might call ahead to make sure a site is available, but during the week, you should have no problem. Good roads getting to the park, and some real fun hill, but we had no problem in our 30' class A with a toad. Also, this park has one of the best resturants we have been in at the lodge.

Natural Bridge is nice and a lot of camp sights open a month ago.We did not stay there but talked to some that were there and they liked it.We stayed at Buckhorn lake a army core lake.We were the only ones there other than the host. The host and others around there were very nice but the roads to get there leave a lot to be desired.Mountains curves and unless you move on the week end a lot of nuts in coal truck`s and I do mean nuts.65 on two lane roads with blind curves with three axle trailer dumps. Is no place to mix RV`ers that don`t know where they are going in the first place. Also A word of caution going to lake Buckhorn what ever the GPS puts out only go in on Highway 28
the other way is 12 miles of one lane road 10 feet wide in some places with no shoulder or guard rails.Don~t ask how I know.
Natural bridge is nice if you love to hike or the chair lift is there for a price I think nine dollars. The Lodge has very good food with reusable prices.
Also the best place to park to walk up to the bridge is at the lodge.

Jeff, we haven't been there yet, but I have always wanted to visit Jenny Wiley St Pk - I think they have an outdoor theater of the Jenny Wiley story.
But it is really off the beaten path and still on my list of "places I want to visit one day"

I'd say stay away from Breaks Interstate Park. VERY CROOKED roads for miles to get to it and access to the sites are very tight for a trailer as long as yours.
There is a very nice park west of Harold (Pikeville) area. Go to www.epgsoft.com and click on the campground map. Zoom in and it will bring up all the public and private campgrounds in the USA.
