Heading to Alaska via Rte 2 from the Mackinac Bridge twd Montana Glacier, BC Banff & Jasper, then to AK.
We are presently camping with our 5er at the Mill Creek CG with a great view of the bridge. I would recommend this site for its cleanliness. The sites are pretty close together & the WiFi is not free($10. for 48 hrs.).
We left Albany, NY on Thurs. 5/29, Camped near Niagara Fls. Crossed Ontario into MI. Camped on Huron shore & arrived here yesterday 5/31.
We plan on leaving Tues. 6/3 & need suggestions on some CGs along the way. We travel about 300 Miles per day tops & are looking also for Walmart & drycamp (cheap) sites.
The only reservations we have are in Danali Tek 7/14-16.
Any suggestions.

U.S. 2 is not over endowed with campgrounds from western Minnesota to central Montana. Not over supplied with WalMarts either. However, there are some. The drive across N Dak & eastern Montana is long and fairly lonely. Not a lot of traffic during the past 40 plus years we've driven it. Have fun. Whatever you think of 2, IMO it sure beats I-80.

You have some Casino with RV parking along 2 in Michigan, also the fair grounds at Escanaba. Wal-Marts are almost all posted no over night parking in the U.P.

We stayed at either a state or private campground in Escanaba, but that may be too close to your departure point. At Wakefield, there is a private or community camppground on the north side of a small lake. There is also an old-fashioned (service at your car) A&W on the highway. Can also recommend camping at the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest campground near Iron River or Brule. Sal's campground is at Warba. You used to be able to hear wolves howling at night here but then they put in an overly-lighted gas bar right across the road and that was the end of that. Bermidji has a KOA but unless it has improved, I wouldn't recommend it. Turtle River SP just west of Grand Forks is OK as is the Minot KOA further on. I can't help you any further as we headed into Canada from Minot. We found it to be quite a carefree drive compared to an interstate but I-94 we found to be a good (scenic) drive too.

Drove Hwy 2 last year. I thought it was a great route, plenty of pull offs, and camping opportunities. Free camping at casinos, truck stops, pull offs, meuseums, etc. For full service paid RV spots, just watch for the camping signs, almost every little town has some sort of RV parking area.

Did you go the full length westward and if so, how was the camping past Minot? Curious just in case we decide to do it again.

We did the rt2 way just a few weeeks ago. Other than than the snow storm that trapped us for a few days in MN, rt 2 is an easy drive. We crossed into Canada at Portal, ND after a night in Minot, ND. No problems.

I drive 2 every year from Watersmeet MI to Minot. Plenty of places
in almost every small town along the way. Free hookups at Bad River
Indian casino. Very little traffic which I prefer as I travel solo for
the solitude plus no-one tells me what I just missed.javascript:;

I drove to Malta, MT and from there headed south. Towns can be a bit far and few between in Western ND and MT, but still no problems with fuel or camping. As others have stated it is a great route. Roads for the most part were in better shape then a lot of the interstates. When I'm in no hurry to get to a destination, I often take secondary roads....a great way to see the country.
There's a great mueseum in Rugby ND, and I believe they also will let you park overnight for free.
