I drove to Malta, MT and from there headed south. Towns can be a bit far and few between in Western ND and MT, but still no problems with fuel or camping. As others have stated it is a great route. Roads for the most part were in better shape then a lot of the interstates. When I'm in no hurry to get to a destination, I often take secondary roads....a great way to see the country.
There's a great museum in Rugby ND, and I believe they also will let you park overnight for free.
Thanks for the info. Beyond Malta, there is a noticeable lack of solid green trees (camping) except at Bear's Paw Battlefield SP. We would go right across to 95 then head north into Canada since one of our two western children lives in Cranbrook, BC. Something else to think about and plan for during the winter months.
Thanks for all the great info. DW & I feel more confident now to take this route. We leave tomorrow & look forward to crossing the Mackinac Bridge & heading west. Today we toured Mackinac Island by bike, ate some ice cream & fudge & would recommend this side trip to anyone who has the time. Route 2 seems to fit our style of travel. Thanks again & Happy Trails!!!
Just last week, we drove Hwy. 2 across WI, MN, ND and MT, crossing into Canada north of Shelby, MT. We drove from Escanaba to Bemidji, MN the first day, on to Williston, ND then Havre, Mt, staying at Walmart's all along the way. If you stay in Shelby, MT, there is a nice city campground, called Lake Shilolee or something like that. Great cg, water and electric for $18. The Walmarts in the above cities were RV friendly and easy to find.
Good luck and safe travels.
Kathy
p.s. We're at the 0 Milepost campground in Dawson Creek tonight. This too is a nice campground and inexpensive.
If you are crossing No Dakota on Rte 2, may I suggest a visit to the International Peace Garden (www.peacegarden.com). A little known treasure and a complement to both countries. At Rugby, go north on State Rte 2, then US 281 to the border. Beautiful setting. Camping available there or not far away Bottineau has a city park, east of town, for camping. In western ND, we would stay at Prairie Acres RV Park. Inexpensive but adequate. We may be there ourselves in July.
There is more to be seen and appreciated in ND than most people realize.
