Adam-12, with your way of thinking, we would have never known meat taste better when it's cook because fire is for warmth. We would never have made cell phones because phones were for the house. We would of never had internet because a computer was for office use. We would of never on & on & on! There, now I feel better.

Oh please. Your analogy is weak. NEWS FLASH: There are now readily available chemicals available to treat your black and grey tanks with ease!!!! They've been on the market for years. Guess what???? They work and are now EARTH-FRIENDLY too!!!
How is going back to using "dishwashing detergent" or "laundry detergent" any better than using chemicals S-P-E-C-F-C-A-L-L-Y made for holding tanks?
Also, I'd like to know how in the heck did our parents and grandparents manage to keep their motor home septic tanks fully functional all of these decades???? They used some simple chemicals, probably formaldehyde based stuff that worked fine. Nobody heard of the GEO method. Plus, trying to find stuff like liquid Calgon is difficult. Not everybody carries it. Just read some of the posts here if you don't believe me. On the other hand, readily available septic tank chemicals are found at every RV dealer, Wal-Mart, Camping World, boat specialty shops etc..... The list goes on and on. Plus, there are about a dozen different brands and types of tank chemicals to choose from.
Now we have the luxury to choose between formaldehyde based or 100% biodegradable stuff that effectively eats away at the solids and grease inside your tanks. You don't have to mix anything (like the GEO method) or "worry" about using dish soap, shampoo, Tide, Windex, Bleach, mouthwash or whatever the latest "trend" seems to be at the current minute.... KEEP IT SIMEPLE: Use "holding tank" chemicals. They're cheap, simple, effective. Darn it, don't you have other things to worry about while packing your RV for a nice trip???
Managing the holding tanks is not rocket-science. I'd be more worried about the lug nuts on my double axels, or if my fridge is gonna work properly when I arrive at camp.
I really think you need to just buy a septic tank chemical, throw it in the tank, flush some water down the drains to mix it and......RELAX. Then, crack open a beer, sit in your lounge chair and enjoy the scenery! Don't get so technical and complicated with all this minutiae stuff. It's just a plastic holding tank for cry'n out loud. They've been in use for over 50 years.
I CHOOSE to use it because I get 2 1/2 times as much for 1/3 the price. Key word being CHOOSE. And how are you being beneficial to this post? Your not, so go away.
I think the bottom line is; we all want something inexpensive that does the job! Am I correct? I agree, and I've enjoyed reading the replies. Never thought about using dishwashing detergent however. I'll have to consider this only because I have been unable to find Calgon.
BTW, I use liquid dishwashing detergent to clean sinks, tubs and showers in my stick house. Works very nicely.

Being beneficial because Im using common sense on this subject. Thanks for the insult and personal attack LFD. If you can't afford the $5.00 holding tank chemicals, PM me and I'll mail you some for free. It'll be my pleasure.
Being that Im totally new to this "self contained" unit stuff, may I ask what the Geo method that is refered to actually is?
We just got a MH and I dont know how well the dealer cleaned the tanks before we took delievery of the unit. If indeed they did.
Dont want any problems down the road.
I do know that while on the first trip with it, checking the tanks, even after draining them, the monitor showed the tanks as having stuff in them.

Thanks.
Here's the official link. If you Google "GEO Method" you should find some threads where Mr. Bruni and others have argued about the method, but mostly about each other.
We have been unable to find Calgon in our area, but last week my DW found some White King water softener.
