Brought the 5er home last Wednesday and spent two days getting it ready to go. Went to the Jemez Mountains Friday morning and planned on staying until today. Friday was great. We were dry camping and pretty much had a huge area by ourselves. It was my family and a friends family in their new TT. Weather was great, food was great, beer was cold. Everything was great until Saturday evening.

About an hour before dark we were grilling when a few cars pulled up accross the the road from us. Then a few more, and a few more, and a few more, you get the picture. It's what got out of those cars that bothered me. Nothing but gang bangers. Before we knew it there were 25-30 gang bangers pitching tents, drinking, and starting a big camp fire. To add insult to injury they started walking past our camp and into the woods to use the restroom. This went on for about an hour. I told my buddy that as long as they didnt start shooting guns I could stick it out for one more night. Well guess what happened next? Yup, BANG BANG BANG. I was so pissed. We had our small children with us and there were 10-15 small children with the bangers.

As much as I wanted to say something, I knew better. We decided it was best to leave so we started putting out our fire and packing up. Our kids were pretty scared at this point so we were trying to hurry. Got all packed (in record time) and began backing out. My buddy says, your stabs are still down. Got one up but bent the other pretty good. Was able to crank it up far enough to get home. Fixed it this morning and wasnt as bad as I thought. I can only imagine what those thugs did after we left. They were not that drunk when we left. I felt bad for the other campers still out there, though not as close to them as we were.

So anyway, that's our first outting this year. I hope we got the bad one out of the way.....

Ken

Sound pretty bad, I would have done the same as you did. My jacks might have still been setting there.
I've been camping for almost 45 years and never had anything like that happen.

Be glad you didn't own the property. We had a nice small lot on the Tennessee River in the middle of a recreational area. Adjoining property owner decides to go commercial(no zoning). Read future beer joint. We sold at a small loss and bought in a more restricted area.

Sorry to hear of your experience. Just curious. What kind of CG was this? Was there no security? No cops? No Rangers? Good luck on your next outting.

Happy camping!!! See ya'll down the road!!!

First off, glad no one was hurt. Now I gotta ask...what park and where? We should all know and stay away from it. Also did you get in touch with the park and DEMAND your money back. I know that can be a long shot, but it can be worth a chance.
And sometimes my wife wonders why I carry my .45 with me at ALL times.
Yes even to church and on vacation. That's also why I make sure I pack the 12 ga. in the 5er too.

Hey you had Friday, and Saturday. And a good time, until you left. SOund like overall a good trip. And an experience. Maybe not a good one. But experience none-the-less. Focus on the good times. Laugh about the experience. Believe me...someday, you will.

You did the right thing to get out.

This is actually state road 376. It's about 4 miles away from Fenton Lake and there are no fees to camp there. It's not a CG so the only ones I can complain to is the US Forest Service Patrol. I think I only saw them once while we were there and I have never seen them there at night. We go there often and I do have to say that there have been some noisy campers a few times but never like these low lifes. I'm sorry if that offends anyone but that is exactly what these people were.

Anyway, Jemez Springs is just over an hour drive (at 60 mph) from where we live in Albuquerque, NM. It's about an hour and forty-five minutes to this camping area. It's all dry camping at this particular area but that's why we like it. Plenty of space, until this trip anyway. Why this scum had to park right by us is beyond me. People like that just don't care if they ruin your trip. I'm just thankful we got in a good day and 1/2 before they arrived. We've been going there for the past few years but I probably won't go back again.

And yes, we were armed but we were definately out-numbered and I have no doubt we were out-gunned.....

Wha.....? I don't even know what to say. I guess I'm a little sheltered up here in CT. Sorry to hear about your experience man.

Ken,

Anywhere near Fenton Lake is just about the last place in NM I would go and exactly for the reasons you discovered.

I spent the week before Memorial Day out at Conchas Lake. Had a great time.
