Only been there a couple of times in March/April, but we love the park. Should be nice in early fall too.

We were there Veterans Day last November. There are some pictures on our travel blog link in the signature below. We had a great time with cool nights and pleasant days. Late September should be much warmer than early November. As you said, dodge any hurricanes and you should have a great time.

We were there in late August, this is about the time the Loggerhead turtles begin to hatch. The Park offers nite walks to nest so maybe you will be lucky enough to see one. Very nice campground, we stayed there a couple days in Feb. this year. When we pulled into our site a hawk had just caught a squirrel and decided to feast right above our campsite.
Can't wait to go back
