Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Mark Twain
Wow, what a difference 20+ years makes!! We visited Pikes Peak SP a long time ago, when we were spending a week at Wyalusing SP (WI), basically right across the river. We were not impressed with Pikes Peak - almost no shade, and it resembled a dirt parking lot. Guess those trees have grown just a bit since...! Very nice-looking. Thanks for posting.
Great spot.... We have an Aunt that lives down the road in Manchester,Iowa... Do any of you know if there any any campgrounds with spots right on the Mississippi River?? It doesn't matter if its WI,IA or IL... Just within a reasonable drive 1-2 hrs from Manchester...
We have visited the Original Pikes Peak several times. I like to take a thermos of coffee to the observation point before sun-up and sit to watch the world wake up at my feet. A beautiful view with the sun coming upon the junction of the rivers. Another experience was watching 4th of July fireworks coming from a barge on the river. We had a double view as the reflection on the river increased sight. You make me miss that old place!
Nick, there are some COE and county park CGs in IA that have sites right on the river. We camped at Spruce Creek Park, north of Bellevue, which has several sites along the river's edge. With the water so high this year, though, those could possibly be underwater, or at best very soggy. We were lucky - came through on a Wed. and were able to get the last riverside site available. It looked like folks come & stay a while - no reservations, as I recall.
Farther south, there's Thomson Causeway (COE) CG in IL, about 10 miles south of the town of Savanna. Very nice CG, and we drove thru there a couple weeks ago; it was above water & seemed to be in good shape. Very popular. Both reservable & nonreservable sites; some of the NR sites are along the river as well. Again, luck of the draw. We arrived there on a Monday (same trip as the Spruce Creek campout) and all the riverside sites were full. We did get one with a river view, though.
