I don't know what other states' requirements are, but in Kansas it would be recommended to report the plate/decal lost or stolen with law enforcement. They would enter it as such in NCIC. That way should something would happen and that plate be associated, it would be noted as lost/stolen when law enforcement ran the plate. In fact, the report would have to be made before a replacement plate/decal would be issued.

Something for you to consider...

When I traveled for a living, I had the plate off my company car stolen while parked overnight at a motel. A few months later I got a call from a policeman in that town asking where I was. Seems the the plate was on a vehicle that was used in a gas station robbery. I told him the plate was stolen and I had filed report with his department.

That is the reason why I quit buying permanent plate tags years ago.
Those plates would disappear like hotcakes. The permanent tag would cost $70.00, versus yearly $10.00.

My DH just put plates on a new van for me. He used some special commercial screws that they use in bathrooms to hold doors, fixtures etc. on so they can't be stolen. It takes a hex (I think) to remove them. He said they won't have the right tool to steal the plates.

I just heard that people are stealing plates, putting them on their cars, gassing up and then not paying for the fuel.
They then throw the plates away.
The clerk figures if they have the plate number they have the thief.

At least I am not the only one who has been affected by this kinda thing. Will ask the DMV if I need to make a police report on it. As they tore the bracket off along with the place, I am thinking of drilling the bumper (I don't store hose in it), and mounting it there with some self locking nuts on the inside.

A buddy of mine that I work with JUST NOW told me someone had stolen his motor cycle license plate over the weekend. He has only had his bike for one week!!!!

Is this the next big thing in thievery, to steal a license plate because you can't afford to buy one with gas prices & groceries & everything else so high????

People sure are showing their "morals" or lack of them when things get a little bumpy, huh???????

In St. Louis people are buying plates for one of their cars, then they put one on their extra car. I guess the police are too busy with other things to notice no front plate.

Just got this in an email! Makes sense so be watchful!

INFO FROM A STATE TROOPER

A woman said her son found his license plate missing so he called the
police to file a report. They told him people were stealing the plates
to get free gas. Given the rise in gas prices, people have taken to
stealing license plates, putting them on their car, then getting gas and
running. The gas station will have "your" license plate # and you could
be in trouble for "pump and run." Check your car periodically to be sure
you still have a plate. If you should find it missing, file a report
immediately!!! Keep an eye on your license plate! Make sure you always
know it's there! When the license plate is reported as the "drive off
vehicle", it's YOU they contact! Be aware!!!! Be aware of your license
plates, most of us never look to see if the plates are there or not.

They just need to check I.D. and registration before letting you fill up. Oregon at least has the plate number on the registration card.

I've called police about reckless drivers who were threatening thier passengers lives, giving them the plate number, they told me they cannot do anything about it if I cannot identify the driver. Unless the police are tired of chasing criminals and was told wrong, if the station attendant cannot identify you as the gas stealer then they are out of luck with a stolen plate.
