2002 Ford F150 Super crew 5.4l Triton 4x4. The first trip with our new to us TT we pulled it about 140 miles one way. When we got there everything was fine, we drove the truck around while we camped, and it ran and worked fine. When we got to our home town, I stopped at a stop sign, and then pulled out and heard a noise from the right front suspension area. We had stopped along the way and never heard the noise. Dropped the trailer at home, and pulled away, no noise. Now I am getting the noise sporadicly when I am leaving a stop sign, or light, sometimes in reverse, and sometimes when slowing down hard. It is not as loud as when I had the TT hooked up. It is kind of like a "clunking" noise. I don't think it is the transmission, as I just changed the filter, ATF. And it isn't coming from that area.

Any suggestions on what it could be, or if anyone else had the same problem?

Thanks for your input in advance

Ball joint. If the right one is worn out the left won't be far behind. Replace them both.

Also check your sway bar end links. I had to replace both of them on my Expedition when I had it. My 04 F-150 has massive end links compared to the Expedition. The bolts rust and the nut breaks off. They are easy to change though.

Have you been in any areas lately tha caused a lot of pebbles and stuff to be tossed up by the tires? I have problems on my ford when I run in mud and then loose gravel and the sutff eventually all gets out of the tires.

When I step on the brakes I get a kind of a screeching sound.

I had to traverse a new road install by my house for quite while.

So one day after the fun in the mud and gravel in the fender wells and the brake noise, I put it in reverse and jammed the brakes on a couple of time. That takes care of that kind of noise for me.

good luck.

Is there an easy way to tell for sure if it is the ball joint. And there is an upper and a lower right. Would I have to replace both?

Yes I was in a place that had a lot of pebbles, but then I drove over 140 miles then it started making the noise.

Jack the front end up off the ground and push / pull the bottom of the tire in and out. I use a 3' or so piece of 2x4 to do this. A worn ball joint moves in and out, sometimes with a clunk.

Re the upper ball joint, someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the upper joint and control arm comes as an assembly. I'm not sure you can replace just the upper ball joint. Either way, I tend to replace everything at the same time since I've got it apart anyway and my time is worth more than the parts. Many people do not and I'd suggest that you use your judgement. If you only have 40k miles on the truck they're probably fine. If you've got over 100k I'd replace the upper one too. You'll need an alignment if you do.

Whatever you do, make sure that you install new ball joints with grease zerks on them. Properly maintained, I've found that greasable ball joints tend to last a lot longer than the OEM non-greasable ones.

I have tried just about everything I can think of, and couldn't find the problem. It started to get worse, the noise was happening just about all the time. So I made an appointment with a mechanic. He has had the truck since last Friday, and he can't find anything wrong either. He has only heard the noise once, and the last few times I drove it I could hardly hear it. Does any one here no what this could be? We are supposed to go camping over the 4th of July and I wanted this resolved by then.

Any help is appreciated.
