How do you know when you have bad axles? We need to replace tires, and I noticed that our airstream sits a little low. Is there a test, or a way you can tell?

If it is a new trailer and still under warranty, I would take it back to the dealer and have him look at it. Tires wearing out ahead of time is one of the signs. Is it uneven wear?

Could be the springs.
Could be bushings in shackles.
Crawl under and get axle and spring manufacturer. Tag should be on curb side end of axles. Write down all information including serial numbers. Go to their website and it should give measurements on spring arcs and distances. If not on website e-mail for them for help.

This is not uncommon for vintage Airstreams, just part and parcel to owning and maintaining a 30 or 40 year old rig.

Go to http://www.AirForums.com, join up, and do a search for axles. Lots of discussion, lots of axle replacement info. You can either have it done, or you can do it yourself; it's not difficult to do.

PatSak,

It is our 1960 Airstream. Sadly, so far out of warranty, and so many owners ago...The tires have just died of old age...I just don't want to replace them only to find out on towing and lose an axle.
