So I guess that means that someone with handicap plates would get a ticket for not parking in a designated handicap spot.

That is funny, but I don't think the judge would have seen the humor if I included that in my letter

Probably not, but it would make for a great argument.

The sign clearly states what CANNOT park in RV spaces, nothing shows saying where RVs may not park. Unless there are other signs we have not been shown, the pickup with popup was legally parked, since it did not exceed the space allowed.
Absolutely a fine way for an idiot "MeterMaid" to mess up a town's Tourist trade, every little bit helps!

Maybe you could have said that the message on the sign was confusing I read the sign and it was just a bit much. If you did not speak English as a first language could this have been an out for the ticket?

Normally signs like this are split into symbols on one side and words on the other, the weight limit sign for bridge capacity is one that everyone has seen. Most signs are covered in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. I think that the person that designed this sign was on serious drugs at the time. I don't think that the judge is going to say that his city workers are at fault, so I would say that your 25 bux are going into more weird signs for Cannon Beach.

Here is the link to the document that all traffic control devices are to be in compliance with:

(MUTCD)

The MUTCD is not light reading

Jim,

In my humble opinion you were clearly not in violation as the sign does not specify that RV's (as defined) MUST park ONLY in those signed spots, it states unequivocally that ONLY RV's may park in those signed spots. I call Bulls@t on this one.

Too bad going to court was not a convenient option as you were blatantly wronged my friend.

Next time go a bit further south, Manzanita is a nicer less crowded venue and you would not be ticketed in such an unfair fashion.

I would put my money on the fact that Jim got a ticket because the local cop saw that Jim was from "out of state" and would most likely not contest, nor show up to court. Easy money for a lazy cop.
However, Jim is a smart guy and by using the camera and politely writing an explanation he will be good to go. If he had the time to actually go to court, he would find that the ticketing officer would NOT show up with the required affidavit, therefore his ticket would be dropped.

Cheap shot to tourists.

In Forest Grove, we have what is called "community police" that run around town in marked mini vans and their only job is mark tires for illegally parked vehicles in front of peoples houses.

Now, technically I am not allowed to have my cargo trailer parked in front of my house for more than 24hours in the same spot. I have been working outside when this person has driven by. They saw me, took note of the trailer parked by the curb, and came back an hour later when I was not visible. I walked out of my garage after she parked in front of my driveway, and started walking up to my trailer to mark the tires. As soon as she saw me, she quickly shuffled back into her van and didn't come back till the next day (of which I had already put it back in the side yard). Now, regardless of what I would have done to the chalk mark on the tire after she left, shouldn't she have stood her ground and actually put the chalk mark on the tire. I didn't approach or say anything to her.

I have successfully parked my cargo trailer in front of my house for a month with no ticket, by just removing the chalk marks (all of them). Never has she stopped to educate me on the fact that there is a law regarding trailers parked on the street. She is just hoping to get enough chalk marks in a 24 hour window to satisfy the reason to write a ticket. She wants to play a game of "hide and seek", I'll keep her busy.

I guarantee if Jim was standing right there, the ticket writer would not stop to mention anything to him, nor give him a ticket at that time. The ticket person would watch Jim walk out of site and go slap the ticket on his vehicle. They are just playing odds. Jim will win.

How so? Unless there was a sign that said "Trucks with campers can only park in designated spots" what law did he violate?

Your pu-camper is bearly a camper. It fit in the space nicely. Even with my large camper, we will park in a regular spot to save the a spot for the larger RV's.

I vote: NOT GUILTY

Was gonna say Welcome to Cannon Beach JimandSue, the third capitol of snobbery for Oregon. I usually skip Cannon Beach in its entirity when doing that part of the coast and visit Tillamook and Seaside on either side of it.

Craig, we've had a few chalk marks on cars we've parked over the years on the street. Well used to. They gave up because they have to start over if the vehicle has moved at all from the last spot it was in, regardless of if its still on the side of the street. So, if they bothered us, we've move the car 10 feet forward, or that'd become a good day to "wash the truck", and all chalk in the area is accidentally removed when washing. The Community police left a while back when several of the city cops bought houses in the area and own boats, trailers, etc....

I saw one of those "investigative reports" on a Houston news program. Mall security guards were given ticket booklets to write tickets to people unlawfully parking in handicapped spaces. One security guard had really let it go to his head and he was writing all kinds of tickets that he had NO authority to write. Sort of making up laws as he went along. Enough people complained, and the news cameras documented his actions, so that the Houston P.D. took the ticket book away from him. Could this be the same kind of thing?
