Finally got around to pulling off the old slide toppers. Took them to our local tarp store. They recommended a vinyl type tarp material (14oz). Truckers use it and typically last them 5 years or more.....so I would think it should last many years. They recommended it over sunbrella......and it's a lot less. Anyone familiar with this material. Thanks

Thickness of this material may cause a problem when rolled. Could make roll larger than there is clearance for. Looking forward to your reports on the upgrade.

The weight of the material might make them sag due to insufficient spring tension.

The thickness is the same as the old material......they do make the material in a heavier/thicker material, but the salemens and I were both afraid it might be problem sliding it on. As far as sagging......I can't imagine it sagging as strong as the tension on the roller is, but I will let you know. It'll be a couple of weeks before they can get to them.

I would recommend OEM material in vinyl or Sunbrella. Your awning manufacturer has tried many materials and has selected the best material for the job and it is pre finished so no fabrication/modification is required making changing it very easy to replace.
Vinyl has a tendency to get condensation and mildew inside while rolled up (concern in humid climates) and a woven acrylic does not.

I disagree with this statement. The manufacturer selects the material that will give them the best balance between quality (reputation) and profit (selling price-cost)depending on which market they are targeting (upscale vs low end).
That is true for every aspect of every product. If not then everything in the world would be made with the absolute best materials and we all know that aint the case.

Best "Cost Benefit" over the life of a product is not the best, most durable and maybe most expensive material. It is a balance between all components in a product. Spending $1000 for something you expect to use for 10 years when you can spend $500 and get the same usage is not the smartest thing to do IMO. I think it is called good business sense. The best is nice but that is why they call it luxury.

Personally I would not use vinyl on my slide toppers as a replacement. I currently have the woven acrylic material for my awning and slide toppers and they dry when rolled up. Several friends we camp with pull thier vinyl ones out when we get to our destination and they stink and are all green from algae because they sat for a month all wet and rolled up.
Now, if your slides are out most of the time, don't get wet and then get rolled up for periods of time..then it might be just fine.
