It depends.
I bought an adjustable A-frame towbar (Reese or Valley, I'm not sure now.) for $145, did the installation and wiring myself, and was towing for way less than $200.
However, if you want to go high-end and fancy, the towbar can cost $800 to $1000, plus installation; The wiring can cost $20 to $100, plus installation; and the auxiliary brake system can be $500 to $1000, plus installation.
So, anywhere from under $200 to $3500 to $4000, depending on what you want and what vehicle you are going to put it on.
Have fun shopping.
EDIT: I should have pointed out that Harbor Freight has an adequate 5000 lb. capacity adjustable A-frame towbar for $50, (more or less, depending on the current sale). I bought one last year for a light-weight Jeep. It is very similar to the $145 one I bought.

They you will still need to install it. Depending on your skill level and what your connecting it to, you might want to job it out to a locale shop. JM2Cents Bill

I will be very interested in the answers for this too.
I made the mistake of waiting till 'after' the house sold to add a toad. Not real bright on my part cause now I have no garage, no tools to do it myself.
So, can someone also give an estimate for cost for the partsw and the price 'fully' installed by a dealership?

I used a Demco Baseplate, Demco Excali-bar, and a ReadyBrake. I made the light kit myself and did all installation. I ended up spending just under $1300. You could save a few hundred by going with an economy tow bar.

Just to give you a hint. This is prices for our '08 Saturn Outlook. I found most of the information at Blue Ox Tow Bars.
Baseplate/bracket - $349
Aladdin Tow Bar - $600
Kit to tow - $175
Wire kit - $100
Auxiliary brakes - $1000
This list does not include installation. The total is just over $2000. You can search around, buy used, EBay, etc., and save some money. Figure installation can be a good 10 hours at the going rates.
It is still worth it to have your own car with you when you get there.
With a Falcon 2 from CW, I spent $1400 one year ago which included all safety chains and installations. If you add an auxiliary brake, and I think you should, it will cost about $1100 or used on ebay for $525.
Just returned from a 4000 mile trip out west and everything worked fine.
No matter what the cost, it is WELL worth having a tag-a-long. You never have to rent a car, you have a "guest cottage" (depending on toad), and it a nice piece of mind period.
We paid $1560. total for complete set-up with toad brakes. We used to pay $60-75 per day renting a car. We have paid that back and then some with the traveling we do.
