Hello all.

For all those who have Ford V10's in their TV's, or motorhomes for that matter, how many have had to fix broken exhaust manifold bolts. This is a known issue with these motors and there are quite a few posts on ford-trucks.com regarding this. My 2001 Ex has a few broken off on both sides and the correct fix it to replace all 20 (10 on each side). Problem is that the dealer wants $1,000 to do this. Has anyone had luck taking it to a local exhaust shop for the work?

You don't drive in winter conditions w/salt on the road then. This is a huge issue in the northern states.

I had one stud break, and another nut fall off (stud was fine). Neither caused an exhaust leak.

When I had the Banks PowerPack installed, a 2nd stud broke when pulling the stock manifolds.

The shop (Ed's Muffler's... local to Portland only I'm sure) charged me $75 each broken stud, so $150 total.

I'd try a local shop, and just replace the broken ones.

Yea, I've got about six broken between both sides. Most are just the nut broken off the stud that I can tell. I can see one that looks to be the stud snapped off at the head (hard to tell with the manifolds still on). I do want all of them replaced though.

I just had mine done at a local shop. My truck had 83K on it. WA does not use salt on the road. The problem is a poor design, too small of studs and a big long exhaust manifold that gets hot and cools so it expands and contracts. I thought I only had 1 broken. 6 came out in 1 piece, 4 were broken in the head, and 10 came out in pieces. It cost me $1,000 and it was well worth it. The nuts will snap off as they are compromised where they contact the manifold.

fix them all the time. the real problem is the manifolds warp snf bust the studs. The studs almost always come out easy and I mill the manifolds straight again and install no gasket if the surfaces look clean or copper gaskets it they look rough on the head. the prolem is heat transfer from the manifold and the head. non 100% metal gaskets insulate heat between the two and they expand at different rates, and cold water hitting a hot manifold doesn't help the warping

I ended up replacing 7 total.

3 on one side and 4 on the other.

My local mechanic charged me about $300/side with parts and labor.

Ford even sells a kit because of this problem. Most of the time they can back them out with a EZ out. They are only torqued down to like 24 ft.lbs. The other trick is to tack weld a small nut onto the shaft of the bolt and then back them out. If they end up needing to drill them out Ford sells a kit with sleeves and stainless steel bolts to fix the problem. (but they won't admit there is a problem)

Well known problem with the early 2000's.

I just sent my 01 F250 v10 up the road for a 08 F350.

Good luck.

I had about six broken studs between the two sides,I removed both manifolds and got all the studs out easily, thank god they are stainless, cleaned all surfaces good, put new gaskets in and replaced the studs with grade 8 bolts coated with nickel antisieze.
