Ooooh, I have another one! Did anyone else's mother make tuna casserole with crumbled potato chips on top back in the late 50's and early 60's?? YUCK!! Nasty stuff! I don't know why she thought that tasted good??!

Made with cream of mushroom soup and a little velvetta cheese, it was one of my favorite dishes Crumbled saltine crackers were good on top too.

My mother often made liver, floured and fried, when I was a kid. I absolutely hated it but was forced to eat it anyway. I was often at the kitchen table hours after everyone else was finished. The only way I could get it down was to douse it with ketchup and swallow the pieces without chewing. Blah! I even tried it as an adult, just to see if my taste had changed....nope! Still disgusting!
Another disgusting thing she makes is parsnip casserole. She usually serves it at Christmas or thanksgiving. It is sliced parsnip in a tomato sauce, topped with crushed crackers, and baked. It looks and tastes like vomit, IMO.
Oh the memories!

Same as Super Dave but with shoestring potatoes sprinkled on top. I used to like that one!

If it didn't go in the pressure cooker, or couldn't be cooked on high till there was no moisture left she usually didn't make it. My dad loved her cooking. The only thing I can remember liking (and I've really been thinking about this) was her version of chop suey.

My mom didn't kill it the way your's apparently did but the mention of round steak reminded me that I never knew there were different cuts of steak besides a round steak until I grew up and moved out of the house. Imagine my amazement when I discovered New Yorks and Rib Eyes!!!

ditto on the liver and on the tuna casserole. but not because she didn't cook them correctly, but just my own personal taste.
Actually, my mom is --and my grandmother was-- both wonderful cooks. Even simple food, on a modest budget, was wonderful. Can't complain, only admire.
