Went and got my Michigan recreational double endorsement "R" license today.
Cost was $10.00 + $18 surcharge for processing because I already have a CDL "B" endorsement. I just felt the state robbed me of $28.00 as the lady working their said she rarely gets request for this. So how many people are on the roads pulling a trailer behind their fiver without an endorsement?

Had mine 14 years and very rarely use it but I do have it for when ever I need it. Better to be safe than sorry.

I recently obtained the necessary addition to my license in California required to tow a 10,000 to 15,000 pound fifth wheel. There was some testing required, but there was no fee charged because my license was more than a year from expiration. Otherwise it would have been the normal renewal fee. It is apparently not something that is familiar with DMV staff here either because they had to do a lot of research to figure out what I needed and what testing was required.

just curious what kind of testing was required?
my husband and I are getting ready to go to DMV to get our endorsements, his license is up for renewal now, should he pay the renewal then get the endorsement or should it all be done at the same time?

Here in Michigan it was just a 15 question written test, just the basic common sense stuff,no road test. I'm not certain on the endorsement time period, however I'm sure the DMV would probably pro-rate the cost somehow.

yes you need a seperate endorsment, go to www.michigan.gov/sos and look for recreational endorsment "R" for towing a trailer behind fifth wheel.Gives you a license to tow a total combined length of truck & trailer not to be longer than 65ft. And not to exceed the rated towing capacity of your truck.

Here in Calif. in order to pull doubles your required to get a CDL with doubles endrosment which has restriction, no commercial pulling, ect. It was around $110 for lic. and $45 for DOT physical every 2 years.

In British Columbia Canada, I had to get a #51 endorsement (recreational trailer over 10 000lbs) $25 for the 40 question written test, $50 for the 1.5 hour road test and $17 to issue me a new DL. I have never done so much driving in the city towing my 5th! At least the endorsement doesn't expire.
