We're leaving OR on Thursday (June 5) heading ultimately to Austin, TX. Depending on weather we plan to take I-84 to I-80 and see we have two alternative routes to avoid I-35 Dallas area to use either 83 or 283 to Abilene area, then do I-20 east until 281 (west of Dallas) and use that to continue south to our destination north of Austin.
Any preference of 83 over 283? Any suggestions for this route?

I guess it depends on priorities. When I return from Oregon, I stop in Denver to see kids/grandkids, then down I-25 to Raton, over to Amarillo and Lubbock, to Abilene and then south on 83/84 to 183 to just west of Georgetown and then home. I'm not sure where you live in Austin area or maybe I could suggest a better route.
The last time I came home, I went by way of Albuquerque, Clovis, Lubbock, etc and found that pretty easy.
If your destination is close to north Austin, I would use 183 off of I-20 instead of 281 and run it all the way in. If you use 83 into Abilene, I would run 84 down through Coleman to Brownwood and continue on 183 into Austin. By the time you get to 281 off of I-20 from Abilene you could be almost half way to Austin.
