You can try to blame the manufactures, but they were building what the public was buying. You, me and our neighbors were happily buying SUVs and pickups. Looked good in front of the new house they couldn't afford either. If the lots were filled with econo boxes and mini vans business would have been bad.

Back to the original posters point, what everyone seems to be missing is the dealers risk. That new Sub will not go down in value that much. It will just be a matter of time until someone buys it. The rig you are wanting to trade may loose thousands of dollars of value before it sells. He's better off taking the risk on the new one.

The same CNN website has a story on the same page
predicting $150 a barrel THIS summer. I think people
(like me) are just going to have to drive their vehicles
until the wheels fall off instead of trading. It's probably
too late for Ford,GM, & Dodge.

I think the article was speaking to the long term outlook. I would consider this summer to be short term. $150/barrel is less than $14 away as oil hit $136.60 this afternoon.

on edit we just got closer to $150. From the AP:

"Light, sweet crude for July delivery jumped as high as $139.01 on the Nymex, before easing slightly to $138.39, up $10.60."

When we checked into trading our 03 Expy with 67k on it we were
only offered about $4k for it. Needless to say we will keep driving it. We will be cutting down on trips and entertainment.
I am happy some of you are blessed that you don't have to cut back but it's reached a point that we will have to. My job is fuel dependent and the income has not followed the price of fuel.

Just gotta watch those dealers! They wanted to give me a really low trade in on my 2004 DMax...."you know, with diesel prices so high right now we can't offer much", etc. I had to remind him I was trading it in on a NEW nearly $50,000 DMax on which he was reluctant to cut the price down to where I thought it ought to be. He said "oh, yeah, forgot about that"!
