Thanks for the updated security tip, We haven't stayed there for quite a while, and it was for a 49er game.
But there are lots of places to stay in this area. But we dont stay in big city's anyway, plus my DW was born in SF, so we dont need to see it.
I recomend you go north, on state 101,(Golden Gate Bridge) that's the place to start. You have the Coast, the central valley wine country and the gold country, so lots to see.
Mike.

SF is not to bad, we loose less than one RVer a day to gunfire, so have a good time and dont worry about it. Just dont go over to Oakland, there's nothing there you want to see anyway.

There is a place on the coast in Pacifica.. Sorry, I forget the name.
Then there is one in san jose and several in morgan hill. Probably an hour south of SF though. I think if Downtown SF is what you really want to see, then the KOA or the place on the coast in Pacifica would be best. Here is their website. Says they are 15min south. Don't confuse them with the candlestick park that is also south of SF but on 101, not 1 on the coast!

We liked the KOA in Petaluma, had lots to offer for kids and shuttle service to SF points of interest. Not rustic!! It seems to have been converted from a ranch or farm and had petting zoo of farm animals when we stayed there some time ago.

We like Half Moon Bay State Park. Its fairly close to SF and its safe! No hookups but they do have a dump station and the sites are right along the beach for the most part. Close to town and local shopping and probably a 40 minute drive into SF.

People have talked about Candlestick RV for a long time - sure it's in a bad area but it IS secure, has 24 hr guard and we stayed there and it was fine - never heard a single gunshot

I would not recommend walking outside the park at night although it's 300 yards away from the nearest houses and the cops do patrol that area at night.

I'd have no worries about going back there - it's a bit pricey but so is everything in San Fran.

Novato has a nice little park near the 101, just a little north of the bay.(closer, I think than Petaluma). Marin RV Park is a parking lot, with a wonderful view of San Quentin Prison.(Ferry terminal is right next door). San Francisco RV Park in Pacifica is also a parking lot, but a much nicer parking lot.(better view and local restaurants). If you you prefer a country setting, try Olema RV Park out on Point Reyes, above San Francisco(right on the San Andreas fault, let's rock and roll!!!).
